Katrina Evacuees To Be Housed At Lowry Site
Planes Loaded With People To Arrive At Buckley As Soon As Sunday
UPDATED: 10:13 pm MDT September 3, 2005
DENVER -- With shelters in Louisiana and neighboring states overflowing with people fleeing flooding from Hurricane Katrina, Colorado officials on Saturday said up to 1,000 refugees will be housed at dorms at the former Lowry Air Force base.
Military and civilian planes were to begin arriving at Buckley Air Force Base with those displaced by the storm as soon as Sunday, Gov. Bill Owens said at a news conference. News of the arrival came on the same day as 700 Colorado National Guardsmen left to the Gulf Coast to aid in the search and rescue efforts.
Once here, refugees will be given credentials for access to Lowry, most of which is being converted into a residential development, given a health screening and bused to the emergency housing.
"Our focus for these people is the next 48 hours," said Gov. Bill Owens. "This (housing) could be weeks, even months for some of these people."

Monday Update

Frequencies remain pretty much the same:

Mac 1, 2 & 3 on DTRS

AFD Tac 3 and 4

DG Event 1 & 2.
Dedicated feed on www.live365com/stations/jimmnn

DG EMS physician advisor on scene today at EMS staging, triage near the Lowry gym.

ARES using 449.450
Dedicated feed on www.live365com/stations/jimmnn4

Jeffco IMT has set up a dedicated repeater at Lowry to improve communications there but no one seems to know when or if the first flight will arrive today.

Communications from state EOC (South Metro FD Headquarters in Centennial) also seem to be clearer today.

Noon Monday / just changed to 146.805 / tone 186.200.

Believe that's just the internal Lowry operations, because they were chatting too much. The entire ARES operation across multiple sites remains on the 449 machine.
