DENVER -- Denver's chief of police is the victim of a burglary at his home.

Police say two men broke into Chief Gerry Whitman's home around noon on Tuesday and took a variety of items.

The chief said it's an unfortunate incident but is confident the suspects will be caught by the men and women of his department. He did not say what was taken from his home, located at Dayton and Hampden in the Hampden Heights neighborhood.

"Chief Whitman also stated that material things can always be replaced but your loved ones cannot and he is just relieved that no one was home at the time of this incident," Denver police said in a released statement.

Denver police investigators believe that burglary was random and the robbers did not know whose home they were burglarizing.

Investigators say the suspects gained entry through a window and left the same way, fleeing on foot.

Witnesses say the burglars were two men, one white and one black, between 18 and 20 years old, police said.

Our records indicate that there has not been a significant increase of burglaries in the area, this particular precinct has seen an increase of 3.8% but yet records also reflect that burglaries have declined significantly in other precincts. This decline is due to the multiple arrests that have been made by officers that are out on patrol daily, in addition to the time and effort that is put forth by the Denver Police Department detectives.

Citizens are reminded that if they information that pertains to either incident or any other unsolved case they can call Crime Stoppers at 720-913 –STOP and remain anonymous.
