Default Railroads update

I've gone in and updated the information for UP and BNSF in the database. UP is accurate and BNSF should be fairly accurate based on information I have received. Yes there are duplicate frequency listings which I tend to avoid, however the format should make good sense for the area's covered and readability. Not everyone has a DB aware scanner, so I don't think it will really affect the greater masses.

I am missing information for Rock and Rail, the tourist railroads and the smaller operations. If anyone has verified channels and locations please post in this thread and I'll add in/organize the database with them.

At least now we don't have a bunch of "road" channels with no location.

Thank-you for this; the hard work is obvious and I truly can't wait to start trying this list in my travels.

Select 'Colorado' in the database main page, then select 'Colorado Areawide Frequencies' window(lower right scrolling window), in that list you'll see 'railroad'.

Thanks. It's been a long time since I wanted to look anything up. The railroad range is so small that I used to just do a search on the radio.

Sure- and in addition, PJH has gone as far as to identify each freq, and those tags are uploaded through the Database to my Pro-106 so now I simply upload to radio, and fly down the highway with a glance to the display when I hear traffic, and PJH's tag tells me what I'm hearing....

I'll also revising the Wyoming database as well. I was torn between listing the subs sep but that actually clutters the info even more. When I can perfect it, ill try to make some wiki entries and place information there to help it. It will just take some time and some free time.

Moffat Sub MOW (Maintenance of Way) channels:
MP 17 to East Portal: 160.7250
Winter Park to Bond: 160.6050

Denver's Union Station was using 161.550 before the construction. Since the tracks have been torn up, I'm not sure when it's rebuilt if they will use this freq.

Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad: 160.860 and 161.295

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: 160.350

I have also verified as of October that 160.590 is the BNSF Raton Subdivision. I know the frequency is in use at least from Trinidad (not sure how much further north), at least south to Las Vegas, NM. (The Amtrak documentation I have says La Junta, CO south to Lamy, NM)

Correct on Raton. For some reason I thought I had it in there. Changes enroute.

161.550 MHz is still used by Amtrak in the depot in Denver. It's also used by the Manitou & Pikes Peak
Cog Railway as well. You hear the trains on Pikes Peak from Denver.

Smile Colorado RR Freqs

161.145 MHZ (AAR 69) is used for the mainline between North Hazeltine to Speer on the UP Greeley Sub between Denver and Cheyenne.

Default UP Greeley Sub

The database shows 160.410 MHz, something I've not found in use in Colorado on a regular basis... I live on the northside of Denver and monitor the railroad channels daily.

Hmmmm... I've had 160.410 MHz `in the rotation' for my `foaming' for sometime and I've found it to be quite useful up North of Greeley and into Wyoming in the corridor between I-25 and HWY85. `Traffic' isn't anywhere near as busy as what one is used to on the PS/DTRS freqs but, there is enough between it and the other RR freqs around there to include it.

160.410 was just a typo. Fixed to show .415. Thanks!

I'm confused! 160.415 is not a valid railroad frequency.
160.410 is valid and is AAR Channel 20. Every 15 kHz is the next channel unless you use the new narrowband channels which would make the next frequency up become 160.4175 but the AAR channel number would be above 100.
I don't have my narrowband AAR channel numbers handy.

Did you mean 161.415 which is valid and is AAR Channel 87? That is the only valid RR frequency that has .415 after the decimal.
Or did you do a double typo and really meant 160.145! That would be AAR Channel 69.

Thumbs up

Have an excel spreadsheet attached for railroad monitoring in Colorado from a long time local rail fan, while dated it's still pretty accurate.

Thanks, Jim.

Anecdote:
Back in the '90's when my son was about 7, our family went up to Cumbres Pass just for a photo opp, with the trains in the snow, and some scanning. It turned out to be a triple-header, and two of the engines ran out of water. They had to brake all 17 cars full of passengers and detach the engines in order to get to the top to the water. I have the whole operation on video, with audio from the scanner hearing base and engineers, and narration from the kids! Just one of the treasures I'll keep close.
