DENVER - Thousands of people gathered at Civic Center Park Saturday to protest federal legislation that would criminalize undocumented immigrants.
The rally started at 10:00a.m. in downtown Denver. Police estimate about 30-50 thousand people jammed the streets causing road closures.
Authorities closed Broadway, Bannock, Colfax and 14th Avenue for the protest. Police had their riot gear ready as a precaution, but the rally was peaceful.
Congress is on the verge of passing legislation that will decide how immigrants will be treated for decades to come.
Supporters are demonstrating across the nation because they fear that immigration reform could pass through the Senate Judiciary Committee without reflecting the wishes of the people, says local community organizer.
Group organizers of the rally have a permit to gather at civic center park until 1 p.m.
