Just ask anytime Jeffrey like you have it's really not rocket science only 2 or 3 control channels are needed to monitor most counties and some it's just one CC. The other thing to remember is the best control channel for a county is often not located without that county. Lookout Mtn or Thorodin for example.

What counties specifically are you interested in?

It's really not that hard Jeffrey...
Most of those sites are appropriately named for where they're located (some can be a bit cryptic). Obviously for what you want to monitor, sites like LaVeta, Punkin Center, Monarch Pass, and Smelter Hill in Durango aren't going to be sites that you'll need.
A little detective work will guide you. Start off with Lookout, Thorodin and Cheyenne Mtn...

Yes indeed pro96com list on yahoogroups and also remember what sectors of the state Zone 1, 2, 3 and 4 CC are in, map provided and that will begin to narrow it down for you.

Douglas:
Site 103 Silver Heights
Site 104 West Creek
Site 107 Smokey Hill
Site 108 Lookout Mtn
Site 110 Franktown
Site 164 Chevron

What you need to remember Jeffrey is this is not an exact science by any means and while your results may vary it’s also fun to experiment some sites such as Mead and Admin have very limited coverage areas and some like Lookout and Thorodin have just the opposite but that is also not always good because so many radios affiliate with them and it also increases your chances of having some TG’s blocked from those sites.

There are also unique characteristics of the coverage that we continue to learn everyday such as Dakota Hill near Central City having pretty strong coverage down into the Loveland and Ft Collins areas and Mt Thorodin having good reception near Limon and things such as that which you can only find by exploring.

Remember more often not better the scanners can get confused and often tied up if they have the option of 3 or 4 strong CC’s to choose from in the same bank.

A good map of Colorado is also your friend as there are files here that have the sites plotted by there location and site number on these google maps and others.

Thanks Jim, this helps me out a lot as well. I've had my 396 for quite awhile now. I just put a whole bunch of stuff into different systems hopeing I'd hear something. There is a huge difference in my knowledge of entering conventional frequencies to entering whole digital systems.

Before the antenna changeouts occured there were a lot of sites you could hear a long way out on the horizon if you didn't have co-channel or adjacent channel interference (long directional yagis help). I think there are still some mountain tops that haven't had the antennas changed yet.

The other thing that happens Harry is depending on how folks have there radios programmed, I always put site # and alpha tag, they think there hearing Walton Peak from Greeley for example turns out there actually hearing New Raymer CC on the same frequency.

Can you enter these sites in any order, or do they have to be in a specific order? I always got caught up and frustrated because I screwed up the order that I put the freqs in, and I think that might have to do with poor reception? Thanks and sorry for the stupid questions!

I've noticed i'm in the DTRS hole. I'm in south longmont which is the lowest part and in a bowl of the surrounding terrain. Though longmont has bad reception pretty much wherever I go, I work on the 5th floor of the 1st bank building in Longmont and get horrible reception there.

With P-25 DTRS frequencies order is not required, luckily, think you may be thinking of EDACS systems.

That's also why programming software is so helpful because it pretty much does it for you.

Cool! So I'm assuming you can put 700mhz and 800mhz freqs in the same bank? I was taught how to program my first scanner(RS Pro 95)by a guy in an Aurora Radio Shack when I was like 11 or 12, and I have had problems ever since! Thank god for good people who know what they are talking about!! Thanks very much!
