New to the World of Scanning and trucking!! need help!
So, i been using the pro-2055 and since all of Colorado is now digital, i'll be getting the 2096 very very soon. My first line of question is this-
What is the easiest way to program for digital trucking for Jefferson County Sheriff Colorado?
Will the Win96 Software program Digital Trucking?
What is Control noise? So far i'm guessing it's a like humming engine kinda revving noise.
What is a Talk Group ID and what does that mean in terms of programming etc? Where do you find out the talk group id?
I'm fairly new to trunking and any info about programming etc would BE AWESOME!
Cheers,
Ryfly

Welcome. Check out the WIKI link at the top of the page there are numerous articles there in reference to Digital Scanners and Trunking. Win Software is good software and there are others out there too. such as Butel and PSRedit. Take your time and study the materials and dont be afraid to ask questions. Good Luck Hoser

Welcome RyFly. Please take any Colorado-specific questions to the Colorado forum, as mentioned in the writeup for this forum...there are also a couple of Co.specific Yahoo groups I would join, as listed in our Mailing Lists article in the wiki (you can't have too many sources of information).
I would also concentrate on the Trunking article as found in the 'forum specific topics' area of the first page of the Wiki - study the basics first, then you will get the idea of what the 'control noise' and talkgroup IDs are all about. We also have a glossary under 'Special Topics' that will define some of the more common terms you will read here.
Basically speaking, when you see 'talkgroup id' think a group of users, or in client server terminology, a bunch of networked clients. The basic idea of a trunking (not trucking - I get a good laugh when I see that typo...) system is that numerous users share a set of frequencies in a network. This will become clearer to you once you study the basics articles as linked in our wiki.

Welcome to the Colorado Forum. We have a ton of people here that can answer just about every question.
I can answer the Win 96 question. Yes it will program digital trunking, or ask people here. They might have a Win 96 file they are willing to share. That helped me, well that and driving the people here nuts. Once again Welcome!

I would be cautious about buying a 2096 in the Colorado Springs area. All of the units that I went and bought and subsequently returned seemed to be used/shelf models and all had really bad issues that I didn't know about till I brought them home(like displays going out, going in and out of trunking mode at random). Management seemed to not care or willing to repair them, just try the next one over at the next store. After three tries I gave up. I haven't had any issues with the pro-96 though.

Ryfly,
abqscan(AKA Erik) works at a radio shack in Parker. If you do end up getting a digital Scanner I would highly suggest you buy it from him, or see him soon after you get it. He will even make you your own win 96 file, if you ask real nice .
I went from a 2055 to a pro 96 as well. I love my pro 96. But the learning curve is really steep with the 96, so I would suggest asking a lot of questions here. Or going to see Erik. That should help you out a ton.

Hey everyone, Just got a pro-2096. I'm out of a Windows computer to use to program the pro-2096, so far i have done it manually. Got Most Front Range Towers in one bank. Got all CSP Talkgroups in for one bank as well. Also got the Jeffco Sheriff in. Its so beautiful to here the sweet sounds of chatter. Thanks about the info about Erik in Parker, I'll probably travel down there Soon to have him program everything in. Been a mac head for a long time with no windows computer when i need it lol.
Thanks for the help!
Cheers,
Ryfly

Yea, only like 2 banks though. And yep, it gave me a headache. So i'm either going to find a windows computer, or go down to parker LOL.
But so far so neat. Been listening to CSP. Trying to learn how they operate so i can avoid tickets and etc lol. Don't know if that will work.

Man I have some bad news. If your scanner bank is in open mode, witch I would think it is as you programed it by hand. You might be hearing more then just Jeffco and CSP in Jeffco. Erik and others here can explain it better then I can (and I hope they will!). But as for doing all this by hand, your my new hero . Sorry Jim, his kung foo is stronger then yours at this point

LOL, yea, that took me a hour to figure out why i kept getting all these different talk group id's that i didn't program. I finally figured out how to close it into just scanning the talk group id's i programmed in. LOL. Thats where the headache got worse LOL

I wish I could help you more. But as most people here will tell you. I know next to nothing when it comes to the state system. I finally stopped bugging people here and just stuck with a premade program I got from Erik and One I got from Jim. Hopefully people here will step up and try and talk you though things. But yes when you have the chance go see Abqscan(Erik), His store is really easy to find.

Another Jeffco newbie
Not to Hi jack Ryfly's thread but I just had to say hello being a newbie with his first post, and knowing Ryfly from another forum where he is "The Weather God" with almost a cult like following. I will let him divulge that info if he wishes. I just sold my Old Pro-64 and was looking a buying a used 2052 off of craigslist until I found this thread and also found out about everything going to digital in this area (Jeffco Pine Junction/Conifer/Bailey area). I was hoping to upgrade to a 1k channel with trunking capabilities and now here learning about the banding and digital aspects. Small world isn't it Ryfly

Programming by hand gives one an appreciation of the power of using the computer to do it. I did a LOT of programming of my 2096 before I caved in and got programming software. In many ways it helped burn in the differences between channels and TGIDs.
Don't forget that with a simple mono audio cable that the radio can be give the program of another Pro-2096 or Pro-96. This is how I deliver updates to a co-worker's radio.
I put his program into my radio's Vscanner then go to work. At work I load that program into my radio, connect the cable from mine to his and transfer the bits.
So all you need is a willing person to share their program with you. One of the occasional scanner group meetings would be the prime place to get this kind of help.
Only real issue with that is that many of us program the front screen greeting message. I put my name, phone number, and location & program revision on there so you'd be getting that stuff from the clone operation.

I definitely would try to invest the money into a Pro-2096. Most of Everything is Digital. Only a Few areas are Analog like Park County and Elk Creek Fire etc. So far i find my digital WORTH it. I got All of Jeffco, CSP across the Entire State, and i have fun listening to Adams County from way up in the Mtn time to time. If you get a 2096, and your up where i am, i think i can copy my scanner stuff into yours.
So far this is what i have in them..
Bank 0-
Jeffco Police.
Bank 1-
Colorado State Patrol
Bank 2-
Eagle PD
Avon PD
Vail PD
CSP
Fire Avon, Vail
Copper PD
Bank 3
