Haha, I love typos, especially when you know the reporter doesn't have a clue about what he/she is reporting on...
"County officials began discussing buying a new communications system to replace the current 20-year-old VHS model five years ago, Prevatt said."

It says that officers cannot communicate with each other and must go through a dispatcher, even if they are just 2 blocks apart..... What kind of system is this? Sounds like how the old taxi pairs were set up.

My favorite parts:
>A conventional radio system limits each user to just his or her assigned frequency. If the police channel is busy, officers have to wait their turn, officials said. The new system would open up communications between agencies.<
Well, if you want to talk to the dispatcher on the main channel and someone is talking, yeah, I could see where you would have to wait your turn - even on a $35m system!
>But because of county budget cutbacks, purchasing the communications system has been put on hold.<
What? Putting the radio system on hold? No! You layoff officers and slash positions!
>"I think with a $35 million price tag, we ought to look at some other things," MacDonald said. "That would force me to see what else is out there.<
Uh-Oh! Someone at Motorola isn't giving enough payolla!
>"In 2011, they will allow those channels to go other people if we have not put in a system. We will lose those channels. It's a limited frequency spectrum; once they're gone, they're gone."<
So, all you do is apply for new frequencies - PLENTY have been freed up with rebanding and 700 MHz.
Just remember one thing folks - the people who say this and write this not only vote, but the procreate!

St. Johns
Yes, you are missing something...
The article is discussing St. John's County, not Duval.
St. Johns is the only coastal county still on VHF on the Atlantic Side of Fla.

Yeah, the title is very misleading.

Didn't the city of Jacksonville Florida go P25 encrypted with JSO and P25 with Jacksonville fire and rescue years ago? When I lived in southeast Georgia they'd been on a system I could no longer monitor with my analog Pro97 and Pro95. Wait, are we talking about St Johns county or Jacksonville Florida? Now I am confused.

The ARTICLE is about St. Johns County. The TITLE is Jacksonville. Guess someone doesn't know their geography! Jax is mostly analog encrypted if I recall.

JSO is encrypted not JFD. St. Augustine is in St, Johns County not the other way around.
Even Nassau Co. the actual first coast county South of GA has a P25 encrypted system. Must be a lot of dogs at large and cows on the highway calls there.
