What happens when and if it rains and the smart phone gets wet, my touch screen usually locks up and stops working or does random things.

Smartphones are in no way public safety quality.

Talking San Luis Obispo SD

Well, the department leaders at least had the foresight to not be taken in by the smooth-talkers from

We have one of our EMS crews that when they leave the state (Georgia), they can not use the SouthernLinc (Like NexTel but belongs to Georgia Power), so they have an Android phone that will connect to it and they can talk to us via that anywhere in the nation.

the Harris "be on P25" IP app is pretty cool. A simple app connects to a gateway, and out on a P25 DTRS you can be- or listen.

Similar systems exist for MotoTRBO and NexEDGE.

Motorola (and Harris) has been working on a bridge gap between radio and phone. Motorola's is the LEX700 and Harris is the InTouch RPC-200. Both are android or windows based phones using a LTE gateway to get back to the radio system if out of range.

Both are expensive and haven't really hit the market yet.
