Talking A common sense decison

The Police Department has decided not to fully encrypt the new digital public safety radio network after taking a few weeks to contemplate the possibility, according to the police chief.
"The Greenwich Police Department discussed the matter internally," said Chief David Ridberg. "I made a recommendation to the first selectman in his role as police commissioner that we continue our current practice of broadcasting in the clear and only encrypting for sensitive operational issues."

Wish Wolcott PD would do the same. They are using their old frequency of 453.15, but now it's in encrypted P25 digital, meaning other towns and local fire and ambulance personnel can't listen. All it takes is one critical incident for encryption policy to get a second look.

Glad that Greenwich decided to stay in the clear and only encrypt when they need to. Redding is also going to do the same once they switch over to digital in August they will stay in the clear and only encrypte when they need to. Its too bad Stamford won't do the same thing.

I can see and understand the need for sensitive operations and information. But, outside of the obvious is adds another curtain of secrecy to the conduct of Police Officers who are already under a microscope for their conduct. For most of us here we know their is many other com's available for "less then kosher" handling of incidents, Nextel, celluar etc. But, things do happen, during regular patrols by less then standup officers and the only way a person would even know, is by someone who heard it.
