UCONN Area Monitoring
Hello CT Forum:
Looking for some guidance & expertise from any guys monitoring in Tolland County, particularly the immediate vacinity of UCONN in Storrs. I'm setting up a BC796D to monitor UCONN and the surrounding area and would like to program in as much as possible. Below is what I am starting with, but any suggestions for additional frequencies to include is welcomed & appreciated. I like to monitor just about everything (PD, FD, EMS, Town Services etc.), so feel free to offer up anything of interest in and around the Storrs area. If you happen to have a Uniden programming file for this area and don't mind sharing, that would be great too. Thanks in advance!
UCONN Fire: 33.5600 (179.9)
UCONN Fire: 453.4000 (167.9)
UCONN PD 1: 852.8750 (223)
UCONN PD 2: 853.1125 (125)
UCONN PD Ops: 853.3625 (174)
UCONN Student Patrol: 853.8500 (047)
UCONN Electricians: 464.8750 (156.7)
Mansfield Fire: 453.9125 (151.4)
P.S. I'm assuming CSP Troop C would be good to include, but not sure which talk groups cover the Storrs area?

Are you in CT? Your location tag says New Hampshire?

Hi Rt169Radio:
Yes, I'm up in NH. The CT set-up will be a remote operation located in Storrs that I'll manage from up here. I have similar remote set-ups operating in FLA and NJ as well. Thanks.

Hello Mike:
I must say that I'm impressed! Would you care to explain how you accomplish this? It something that I've never considered. Thanks much,
Russell

Hi Russ:
Thanks. The first and hardest step is to find a "willing" family member or friend who lives in the location where I want to have a remote scanner and get them to agree to let me put my stuff there ;-). From there, it's just a matter of setting-up a dedicated PC (I have a few spare desktops/laptops laying round) at the remote location and then connecting the scanner & audio cable to the PC, followed by configuring the broadcasting software. I install LogMeIn, Remote Desktop and/or VNC on the remote PC so that I can access it from NH and do all of my programming etc. as needed. The separate PC allows me to do what I have to without disturbing anyone.
Depending on the scanner used at the remote location, I typically stream the audio using Proscan and/or Scannercast and listen from NH using any of the on-line audio players. Can listen using my iPhone/iPad as well.
Thanks - Mike

YES Troop C would be correct-
During spring break is the only time I monitor Troop C. They use Car-Car talkgroup as well as the East District Traffic Talkgroups, but seem to change what they use every year so best to put them all in there during the event to see which they are going to use.
I am in SW CT so don't really monitor anything else in NE Ct.
You may want to include Lifestar in your lineup- they respond out that way quite often

Just a follow-up on this thread. My remote setup is up & running (located adjacent to the Storrs campus). Using a Uniden BC796D scanner and just a rubber duck (RS 800 MHz). Reception is quite good on just about everything on my programming list, with SP Troop C being loud & clear. Suprisingly though, UCONN Police reception is not as good as I had expected, given the close proximity of the scanner. They come in a bit scratchy at times.
Thanks - Mike

windham/willimantic aren't well covered. Have you thought about feeding them? 33.64 I believe.
There are feeds that include this area but there are 1000 other frequencies in the scanner making it hard to follow an incident.
I'm woking on a remote feed myself. Going to install it in about 2.5 weeks. Been an interesting project.

That's what they are licensed for, but not nessesarly running.
We were licensed for 125 but ran at 50 watts and worked well. The name of the game these days (along with ERP and rebanding) is to run the min amount nessesary. Long gone are the days were you run 250 watts on a 200ft tower on a mountain top and blast your closest 500mi neighbors.

Good info- never thought of it that way. Especially since they have a limited coverage area you wouldn't think they would need all of that power.

I Live about 15 miles East Of Storrs & I Can't Hear pd/fd at all In My house & Then When I'm mobile BARELY.
Every so Often The PD Comes In 850mhz
FD On 33.56/453.40
Scratchy/Barely readable 2 Say The Least

My equipment is essentially located "on campus", so distance is not an issue at all even with just the RS 800MHz rubber duck. After listening for a few weeks, PD is not as bad as I first reported. It's loud enough, but just a bit scratchy for my liking. FD is much louder than PD. UCONN services like maintenance, dining, husky patrol etc. all come in loud & clear with crisp audio. CT SP Troop C is the best audio of all of them so far.

NYRHKY94: Are you broadcasting this feed publically? I spent my years as an undergraduate listening to UConn PD and FD and there's almost never a dull moment on campus.

Hi Electroe:
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately no. This is a private feed that needs to remain so for a number of personal reasons. My apologies. I have 7 other feeds that I currently provide on the RR site, but this one can't be one of them. For what it's worth, I had been hoping someone else near UCONN would put up a feed for "both" police & fire. The remote setup was my only other option. And you are correct about no dull moments ;-)
FYI - There is a public feed on RR dedicated to just UCONN fire.
Thanks
