Ct D.O.T question

Does anyone know what crash trucks or crash units are? I hear them on the Norwich D.O.T freq of 47.300

The trucks that park behind disabled vehicles or road construction and have the large accordian crash attenuator hanging off the back of them. Some have the water/sand barrels on a rack towed or hanging off the tailgate

they are also referrred to as the CHAMP trucks Connecticut Highway Assistance Motorist Patrol (CHAMP) i never really hear them talk on the freqs in the i84 waterbury area--the guys really dont talk much at all

There is a slight difference.

CHAMP or "Service Patrol" trucks are on the road primarily for assisting motorists with jumper cables, tire change, out of gas, etc. as a courtesy.

Crash Trucks are used as "Impact Vehicles" at construction sites or rolling road blocks for a "slow roll". Cases where drivers are likely to plow into the rear of other vehicles while they update their Facebook.

CHAMP vehicles have "Service Patrol" lettering. Both types of vehicles have attenuators. They used to use cruisers as "Impact Vehicles" before everyone starting driving like idiots.

I have 463.9125 PL 146.2 (Mobile), 151.025 and 151.115 for Base listed for CHAMPS, though I have never heard them say anything.

I can confirm hearing them on several occasions on 151.625 Dpl 023
Or at least DOT trucks of some kind, maybe not necessarily the crash trucks.

no charge they help until a tow rruck comes or give you a gallong or two of gas if yuou run out and help fix a flat-its a great deal

Boy, I'll say it's a great deal. CT has to be one of the only states that does that.

Florida also has a similar thing, although it is subsidized by one of the insurance companies. I believe the call them Road Warriors or something. Its been over a year since i was down there last so i dont quite remember.

im actually down in florida on vacation now as you posted thisis the state farms motorista assistance program and they also have a service called STARR which you call and they come change a flat,give gas,and can tow but these are all for a charge,i believe the state farm truck is similiar to the ct dot champ trucks, i seen one last time i was here,they have a ton of pretty flshing lights just like the ct DOT champ trucks

Yea those State Farm ones were the ones that i was thinking of. Ive never seen those anywhere else so i just figured they were somehow connected with the Florida DOT. Thats why i figured that DOT ran them and State Farm subsidized them. But on the topic of lights, they are extremely well lit up.The first time i saw one i was like "WTH is that???" I saw a few with a telescoping lightbar behind the cab that they raise up in traffic or in areas with poor visibilty. They are really nice trucks, some are even on medium duty chasis.

they are kool truck the ct dot champ trucks have the amber and red light that are bright as hell but i dont thimk they have a light tower on theirs,but they are a big asset in the state

The CHAMP trucks in the Waterbury/Hartford area use 47.080. They use two PL's, 141.3 and 146.2 depending on the dispatch. Their portable repeater is 453.9125, not 463.9125. They do get used on occasion when they are out of their trucks for long period of time, but are very low power.

Would anyone know what area the DOT zones are in? I hear them saying zone numbers when they do the weather roundups.
