Default Blizard of '78 ,,Ha

This storm blows away (no pun) the '78 blizzard. I had 26 inches where I lived in Hamden back in '78. Well here in Milford I measured that much at 2100 hours. It is now 0100 hours and I haven't made enough measurements to get an official average, but there has to be well over 32 inches. It is coming down at 2-3 inches per hour, maybe more. We are stuck in a "training" effect band here. Almost like summer thunderstorm training, but snow in this case. For the last 4 hours! All I hear on the scanner is all public safety vehicles getting stuck. Ambulances on Cmed, Fire trucks on Milford Fire, State PD cars on all the troop talkgroups, and DOT trucks on the DOT channels. Unbelievable.
Thank God we are not getting the winds like Boston. That would really be devastating. How would they get to us if we needed them?
Stay safe,
Bob

I wish I had a list of the civilians who thought it might be a good idea to hit the road after noon on Friday for any reason. Darwin had a solution for all of this. These people are idiots. No brains.

Some drivers had kids in the car. Stranded for hours. Troopers are abandoning their vehicles. As of 1:45AM, the National Guard is responding to emergency situations - and idiots

They interviewed some dude at 11PM on the news. "I needed to pick up bread and milk for my house." Are you kidding me? Dumb a$$!

I wish they issued everyone tickets for 3-6a. Traveling on a closed roadway. A $92.00 ticket for being an idiot.

Took 12 measurements in different locations on my property. They were from 38 to 44 inches so I say an average of 41 inches. The official report from Milford DOT garage was 38 inches. I went to bed at about 0200 hours and we had about 35 inches at that time from just 2 measurements.
Hope everyone is safe out there.
Still waiting for the plow to bury me in again.

i did not hear much action on dot channels except for weather roundup and once in a great while i heared them talking about an accident,i wonder if they are low power and you have to be nearby to hear the guys in the plows talk, and what designations they use? they have a series of number on the doors and i wonder if thats their designation.there are 632 plow trucks, gov malloy said there were going to be 65 payloaders expected to be released to help out towns,i was told awhile ago each dot garage has either 1 or 2 payloaders each.there is someone on this forum that works for DOT maybe he can fill me in thanks

I'm retired after 34 yrs at the DOT,and worked the Blizzard of '78. We were at work for 3 1/2 days straight. This storm will be worse. The numbers on the door is the equipment #. For ex. 3-1321. Where the 3- means a diesel powered vehicle. A 2- is gas. There is a number( 1 thru 5) in a circle on the side which is the District #. There are 4 districts, a 5 is a property control truck. R is repair and S is Stores. Most trucks have 100 watt Maratracs, a few have Kenwoods.

The State DOT in my area (East Granby garage) did a stellar job clearing the roads and intersections. After I did the 30"+/- in my driveway, I had 2 other driveways to do. No problem getting to each (911 dispatcher and EMS worker) to clear them out. Local roads were a bit worse but within 36 hours each was passable.
With all the budget cuts various DOT/DPW groups have had over the last 5-10 years, it is amazing they cleared anything. People need to remember that wanting 0% tax increases and better schools means those with less pull get hit the most.

The radio IDs arent the equipment #s. The dump truck's IDs are by district, section and garage. Ex. 3106. District 3, section31, truck #6 in that garage. Numbers like 4201. 3101 ect are the foreman's truck. Echo #s are Electrical crew (me) Baker is bridge crew , Alfa is Sign crew.
