Trying to program a Uniden Bearcat BCD996T for my brother
can anyone out there at Radio Reference help me program a scanner which we purchased two years ago for our Brother. I am not at all familiar with how to do this for him. I am however committed to getting it done. I have been unable to find anyone in our area who could assist us at all. I am a subscriber to RadioReference.com as recommended by the Scanner master sales person. Two times I renewed this subscription and still can not figure out how to program this with some of the local police and fire frequencies in our agrea. This is a digital unit, and prior David had scanners which were manually programmed.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
A sister trying to program scanner for her disabled brother who
enjoys keeping up to the minute with the outside activies in
emergencies responses.

do you have the appropriate software for your scanner?, if not you will need that & the USB programming cable. Install it , click on the import tab & your on your way. you must install the drivers for the cable BEFORE you plug the cable in & then see what coport is assgned to it & enter that in the software. aAso look & read here for more info http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/BCD996T

Welcome to RR. As previous poster mentioned, you need software to take full advantage of your membership. Fortunately, there is at least one free program that is getting good marks from users: FreeSCAN. Here's more info: FreeScan User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki Once you install it, and the USB drivers as mentioned(if you have a serial port, you won't need the USB adapter), you just log onto RR through your software, follow the prompt to your county, and then chose all or just some of the data to download. Once it is in the software, you just send it down to the 996 and you ready to go. If you already have some software, the process is the same, but let us know what you are using in case you need more help.
You should check out the http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?ctid=1880 page before you down load. You will note at the bottom of the page there are a couple of Public safety trunking systems.Ellenville Public Safety and Kingston Public Safety. David may want those...check with him. If so, then you need to log onto RR twice: once to get trunking systems(be sure to select both site and Talk Groups), and then again to get the conventional frequencies.

Thank you.
I will proceed through this a little more tonight and try again tomorrow. I have the correct usb cable which plugs into the front of the scanner. The power cable is plugged in, of course. But I did not install any drivers for the cable. Also. the co port is not assigned. The software which accompanied this unit was ARC996-BASIC Software designed by BUTEL. For Windows xp/2000 but adaptable to my Vista operating system. I did successfully load this software. The pic of the scanner is the correct unit we have which I am working on right next to my desktop.
Thank you for taking the time to answer this message in the forum.
working to get this programmed for my brother.

Thank you so much. We have software which was included with the Scanner from Scanner master. The CD was programmed by BuTel. (from the Netherlands) (this was the location for their help desk!?!) Ugh!
Everytime I called overseas, dialed to nowhere, or people not available. Anyway, ARC996-Basic Software was the product inclusive with the purchase.
Tomorrow we will attempt again to complete the full set up and hopefully transfer some of the frequencies over from Radio Reference. I was able to select and view, but I do not have a port selected. I will conquer this one in am.
I do hope I can write for help again, until we are successful. Thank you for the support on this forum, and answering the call for help.

ARC software is my favorite. If you need help with it, go to the Scanner Programming Software - The RadioReference.com Forums. A Butel Rep is there to help, as well as many others. Good Luck.
