Recommendation needed

Hello from a newbie.

Can anyone tell me if NCCPD and DSP will be going to a 700mhz trunked system from the 800 in the near future? I'm considering getting a scanner but don't want to have to pay big $$ for capabilities I won't need. Not sure if I want a base or handheld--would use mostly at home but would be nice to grab it and go on the road sometimes
Thanks for any opinions.

p.s.--I can't believe how things have changed since the '80s, which was the last time I did the scanner thing as a volunteer firefighter

No, they will not be going to 700 trunking but any digital scanner worth buying will support this anyhow. It does not cost extra. Uniden and Radio Shack have a number of offerings which work well and will continue to. Just stay away from the older uniden radios (BC250, 296, 785, 796) as they wil not work when all of the current trunking frequencies in the state move down to their " Re-banded" frequencies 15Mhz lower than their curren allocations.

Alot has changed and will continue to change.

The only big change will be the current freq's moving down 15 Mhz (ex. 868.2125 will become 853.2125) W


That's the main change. I am not aware of any other big changes.

Funny thing....I was told by someone who works at Fireboard that no scanner can pickup the 800 trunk system for NCC fire, NCCPD or DSP, even unencryptyed. I just said "ok" but I got the impression that was just what they say to potential newbies to dissuade them from listening in.

My only goal in getting a scanner would be to keep up with what's happening in my county, as well as listening to aircraft frequencies for enjoyment. LiveATC is nice, but I'd like to use teh scanner instead of the computer.

One dumb newbie question before I go...does Elsmere PD and Newport PD have their own systems or do they just use the state 800 system. I remember in the '80s Newport was on DSP's "F1" and just used unique call signs. Not sure about Elsmere PD. Thanks for putting up with newbie questions. Yes I read the FAQ but my questions are of a local nature since I live near Newark.

Elsmere PD and Newport PD are dispatched by ReComm on the State System. Elsmere PD TG 12912 and Newport PD TG 13136 are used as Tactical Channels.

Not surprised that people at Fireboard do not know about digital scanners. I completed the citizens 911-academy in November. The manager of the State PSAP was not aware of the new scanners. They still have BC785's in the Mobile Command Post.

I was under the understanding that the BC796D was able to be rebanded. Or, is the "796" stated above different than the BC796D?

Both the 296 and 796 (often referred to without the 'D' - it means nothing...) will get a rebanding fix in the next month or two, from the last posts by UPman. The 250 and 785 will not. In addition, the optional BC25i digital card is as rare as hen's teeth to find anymore. For those 2 reasons, I'd avoid getting those 2 scanners.

It will take, I suspect, some time for the various software packages to catch up with the changes. I'm sure that will happen in due course
