Weather radio station broken
The News Journal

Updated Friday, October 6, 2006 at 12:38 pm
The National Weather Service radio station that serves much of Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland has unexpectedly gone off the air, the weather service said today.

The station, which broadcasts on a frequency of 162.500 megahertz, went off sometime early this morning.

“National Weather Service technicians are aware of the outage and will be troubleshooting to find the cause of the outage,” the weather service said in a statement.

The transmitter in Sudlersville, Md., in eastern Queen Anne’s County, relays forecasts and emergency weather statements from the weather service’s regional offices in Mount Holly, N.J., and Wakefield, Va.

It also transmits signals that activate emergency weather radios to warn listeners of hazardous conditions in specific areas.

The weather service urged listeners to tune their radio receivers to other transmitters, which are located in Lewes, Salisbury, Md., and Philadelphia. However, much of central Delaware cannot receive signals from those stations without an outdoor antenna.
