Default listening to mototrbo

I want to begin listening to my cities mototrbo system. It is trunked. I would like if someone can send ke in the right direction as to what cables to buy and how to install them. I know you have to open the scanner up. Btw i have a pro 197. I am somewhat handy, is there any sautuering or anything? Would really appreciate any help.

If you find someone that can do that for you, please post the info--A lot of us would be interested.

I learned how to do sautuering when I was young, but now I like to saunter.

Do you have your Extra class ticket?

Try learning how to solder, it works much better.

To get serious, but only for a minute, you can't monitor TRBO with your scanner. There is one non-TRBO reception method available but you'll have to search for it on this board as I'd don't remember its name.

KB1UAM, you'll need to open up your scanner and install a discriminator tap. Search and you should find the details for your particular unit. Yes, you will need to solder to the circuit board within your scanner.

Once you get that installed, look for a program called DSD. There's Linux and Windows versions available.

Use a standard audio cable to hook your discriminator tap on your scanner to your computer's soundcard and then run DSD.

You'll have to tweak things but if you search the already existing threads, you'll find lots of suggestions.

DSD software can decode digital voice provided it's not encrypted, but cannot deal with
the trunking part of the system i.e. will not follow a conversation. Only alternative I know
of is getting a real radio and programming the system(s). That's a fair expense for radio,
special programming cable, plus special software and need to know a lot of system details.

DSD needs a fair bit of CPU power (at least for the Windows version, not sure about
Linux); at least dual-core.

Yes, that'll work.

For the Ubuntu version of DSD you'll get away with a much lower spec of machine....I've run it very happily on a Netbook.

It's more 'install a tap' not 'put it on' - and here's the wiki page for DSD
