Transcode IMBE to MP3

Hi - I am using DSD to record some SmartNet II transmissions. Right now everything is being saved as .wav files. I would like to make them available over the Internet, but I would rather serve them as MP3s to save on bandwidth. It is all happening on a Linux machine.

Right now I am using LAME to encode the wav files as MP3. The results don't sound too good and are sort of muffled. What LAME settings would be good for encoding IMBE encoded/decoded voice? Is it just going to sound bad no matter what, since I am stacking codecs?

Hi - I have played around with a bunch of settings. It seems like "--preset voice" seems to be the best. The CBR setting was also good. The variable bit rate settings seemed a little too agressive even at the higher setting.

It doesn't look like I can upload wav/mp3 files and the zip is too big, but I can email people the samples if they are interested.

The recorded wav is 8kbps, mono, 16 bit.
