any canadians send a unit back to Uniden for repair?

My buddy has a 396 that he wanted to send back (non warrenty work that he will pay for) and called Uniden but they told him to go to Lectron in Peterborough that Uniden repair doesn't take any units from Canadians

But doesn't sound right. I'm guessing a few people have returned items

Maybe if UPMan sees this he can answer as well.

I returned my original 396 directly to Uniden for the silk screening issue, but that whole issue may have been a special case...

repairs

I had an issue with my 996 in May 2008 and was advised ,
by e-mail, to sent it to Uniden in Texas via Canada Post.
Shipped it down. After a week contacted them by phone,
for a progress report and discovered that I was surpose to
have call them by phone first. Not mentioned by the e-mail.
Was advised that scanner was sitting in repair shop;
but, it wouldn't touch until I paid $49.95USD up-front,
also not mentioned in e-mail.
The scanner back in 3.5 weeks, during that time they realized
that my 996 was still under warrenty and advised they would
refund the 49.95USD. Which arrived in September.
One surprise I got was after the scanner was shipped home.
Was a bill two weeks later from Fedex for custom duties .
Which was around $26.00CDN

Lectron

I can only comment on Lectron and my experience with them was fantastic. E mail Clayton Rock there with the problem and get an estimate. Turn around time and pricing is excellent. No problems with the exchange rate and paying taxes, brokerage fees, and or duties on the scanner itself or the repairs done on it. Good luck to your friend TorontoKris.

what about getting firmware updates. I have the bc 780xlt and have read that there is a firmware update. Contacted Uniden by email several times and no responses. I did the firmware trick, my unit shows the original firmware, but there have been several posts about the updates. I cannot find them.. weird

If you can keep it in Canada, do so, or have a Canadian dealer process it for you.
The Customs dance for repaired equipment crossing the border can be a nightmare.

I once shipped a client's DAT tape drive to California for repair, took them 3 tries to repair it. Each time, the shipper kept putting the full retail value on the customs forms.
I had to pay full GST 3 times, and wasted a lot of time fighting with the Canadian govt.
