Lots of testing being done the past few days on Strathroy-Caradoc's new fire channel. Frequency is 171.990 and they are currently using a PL of 250.3, but I would maybe expect that will change to 71.9 when it goes into service (same PL the current 153.980 frequency uses).

Once the testing is complete and all the radios are loaded up 153.980 will be used as a dispatch channel, and 171.990 as an operations channel.

What's with Depts. going into the 160/170 ranges? I always assumed that they tended to stick around the 150's range?

Nothing new really. FDs have been known to inhabit 168-170MHz or thereabouts
which were typically public works channels; sometimes shared. Hull (Gatineau) FD
for a long time was on 169.050.

Old radio technology tended to restrict spread of TX and RX frequencies. Rarely
was a repeater pair more than 5-6MHz apart seen. Now we see 10-15MHz or
more. Broadband TX power amps and better receivers have crept in.

As far as antennas, the basic 1/4 wave characteristic is the same, but there
are wideband versions out there.
