* E.R.T. team members receive specific training to prepare them for the following functions: search and rescue operations, search for physical evidence, crowd management at civil disturbances, riots, strikes, demonstrations, V.I.P. security and containment of situations such as hostage taking, barricaded persons, possible suicides and the execution of high risk warrants.
** The U.S.R.U assists the O.P.P. and other police services and agencies primarily in the search for missing persons, evidence of major crimes and explosive disposal. The program also has the capability of providing underwater security at major events, and responding to marine disasters, plane crashes and anti-terrorist activities.
*** K9 Today, 27 teams: each consisting of a dog and a handler, are stationed at strategic points across the province and provide canine support for search and rescue operations, tracking wanted persons, detecting narcotics, explosives, cadaver and physical evidence.
**** T.R.U. play a crucial role in providing support to patrol officers in extreme circumstances such as hostage taking, barricaded person, sniper incidents, search of an armed or dangerous fugitive, execution of a high risk warrant, and occurrences involving explosives, V.I.P. security and prisoner escort.
***** When called upon to assist in resolving crisis situations such as barricaded persons, hostage taking or high risk incidents, the negotiators respond in teams of three. Each team member has a very specific job to perform while at the scene of an incident.
****** Provincial Emergency Response Team - P.E.R.T. The Provincial Emergency Response Team was formed as a result of the consequences stemming from the terrorist events of September 11, 2001. P.E.R.T. was developed with an objective to counter terrorist threats through the provision of a rapid mobilization capability to address acts of terrorism in Ontario that exceed the O.P.P.’s current capacity both locally, regionally and provincially. The potential urgency and magnitude of a terrorist attack in the Province emphasizes the need to ensure that specially trained members be prepared to ensure domestic security within the Province. P.E.R.T. will work closely with other ministries, agencies and organizations to ensure a tightly knit relationship and process that will assist in protecting Ontario’s critical infrastructure sites should an emergency arise. P.E.R.T. also provides assistance to specialized O.P.P. units in countering terrorist threats and will assist the O.P.P., other agencies and municipalities in developing or defining that part of their program that relates to P.E.R.T.Explosives Robot
