Anyone with experience in software, know if it is possible for an outside user to hack into the modern ELD in the transportation industry? Saw a misleading message in reference to termination of messaging service, but made no reference to functionality of the ELD, as far as drivers logging ability, or connectivity to vehicle operated. Seems suspicious to me, and it's driving the office wild.

OMG....Qual/Omnitracs already hacked by U of MI

Omnitracs can be hacked because it provides a back door to remote control of a commercial vehicle's operating system thru its connection to the CAN of the ECM. This info has been available online for several years. The FBI, Homeland Securty, and others are worried. But the FMCSA has mandated them to be installed connected to the operating system, because the manufacturers could not collect user fees from truckers with the Smart Phone apps. These user fees are over a BILLION dollars per year. Hmm. And yet, until we stop them, they will be the only ELD you can use. You see, Smart Phone apps can be used until Dec 2017, are cheap, easy and are under complete control of the driver. Qual/Omnitracs can be hacked: the brakes, the engine and the steering can be controlled remotely by any acne faced teenager or a Russian hacker. Omnitracs are also an open door for dispatchers to falsify logs. They use the "correction" input, allegedly included in the Omnitrac to "correct" math errors. Ya, sure. Here are links to prove this, all available online to anyone. The original proposal for ELDs was just to modernize logging and FMCSA was ready to approve a simple USB port and flash drive combo for the DOT to access log info. Then Omni jumped in with scare tactics of claiming the USB could harm the computer and touted the ECM connection. http://www.ate-na.com/ "....The usage of a USB based solution provides enforcement with a highly cost‐effective, reliable solution for having instant access to electronic logging files at the roadside, regardless of wireless network availability. Continental regards Qualcomm’s concerns as unfounded.".....(Remember the user fees?) The only way for Omni to make a constant income stream. And they knew it was hackable. All ECM connected ELDs need to be recalled, all of them, at Omni's expense..... Can you hack a truck? September 4, 2015. ....... Omnitracs Senior Director of Product Management, Jeff Champa, "Once the braking system is designed to take electronic input from another subsystem on the vehicle THAT EXPOSES AN ATTACK POINT. Now consider the complexities of a vehicle NETWORK & TELEMATICS DEVICES (think Omnitracs) that essentially connect the vehicle to the Internet and you start to see the POTENTIAL SAFETY & SECURITY THREATS to a vehicle.” He actually admitted Omni devices are hackable!!

As for trucks that are already on the road, owners and fleet managers need to be aware of the possibility of hacking and ensure manufacturer recalls are performed............ ENOUGH SAID????? Then start fighting back!
