I stopped in at my local FD/PD yesterday, and I noticed that in the dispatch room there was a little screen that told who was talking on the radio. I know that they use the Motorola HT1250 and CDM1250. I was wondering if there was anyway to have this at my house or at least on my HT1250. Does anyone know how to do this? I was also wondering if anyone knew how to program it, so that I could transmit my name or call sign.

Metro North Maintenance frequencies still in use?

I was wondering if these metro north MOW frequencies are still in use or if they have switched to cell phones primarily for communications:

I tried searching for this, because I thought someone must have done it before, but alas no luck.

In looking to reduce total space required to operate a computer that does nothing but stream audio to the RR servers, I remembered the SheevaPlug that was announced a ways back.

While some people might be able to find a used desktop with a reasonable amount of power for $99, this seemed like too good of an option to passed up.

For those unaware, the SheevaPlug has a large community behind it (plugcomputer.org) and with good reason. Fitting a x86 1.2gHz machine with 512mb of ram, USB, gigabit ethernet and a flash card reader into something the size of a DC power wall wart makes it seem like a good idea for a way to stream audio from a scanner.

Because these units (can) come with Ubuntu pre-installed on them, I figure it won't be much work to install darkice and start slinging them, but I had a couple questions before I went ahead and ordered one to try it.

Are there good USB audio adapters that work with linux with little to no configuration?

Has anyone installed darkice (or any audio streamer) onto an embedded device over a network. It would be no problem installing it on a device with a GUI (or at least a monitor) but by design this unit has to be configured and controlled via SSH.

Hi. If anyone is looking to get a cupholder mount for their 346XT, I found Belkin's TuneDok Cupholder for iPod works greats for this. You just need to remove the suction cup piece and the belt clip ring on the radio fits right into the cutout on the top of the cradle. It holds it nice and firmly into place. There some space left on the bottom of the cradle, but you don't need to fill the whole thing. The width is perfect and there is no issue connecting the power and accent the function/menu buttons on the side. Search under way in the Pantops area for a suspect in a robbery at the BB&T bank at Pantops just off State Farm Drive. County PD with K9 units trying to track. Just now breaking down the perimeter. Released N30VA VSP helicopter. Dogs had various tracks all afternoon but no one caught yet. Still following a track north of US250.

Importing new TGs into an existing TSYS

Ok I know there has to be a way to import a new set of TGs into a system using WIN500 from the RR database without having to import it as a new system and then copy and paste them over , then deleting the "new system".

I know that may be a bit confusing but just for argument's sake let's say my city has a TSYS and they have 10 new TGs for Parks and Recs. If I want to import it into the preexisting Police, Fire and EMS system can someone help me out on how to do that?

I'm sure its something simple that I have just missed.

Sig Stalker not picking up a darn thing?

Maybe its just me or my location, but when I scan in Sig Stalker mode, I pick up nada. It just scans through all frequencies over and over. Its been bothering me for a long time.
So I am asking if anyone else has success with Sig Stalker..or if it is just something I should not bother with.

Listening to P25 channels

Since the P25 protocol is new in our area, I am now listening to it on my BCD-396XT for the first time. One thing I've noticed; When the P25 agency is transmitting, the 396XT seems to "check" the control channel during the transmission which causes a "break" in the transmission. I can see the P25 on the LCD display go on and off as the control channel is checked. Is there a way to stop this? One would think if the scanner is receiving traffic on the P25 channel, there wouldn't be a need to check the control channel until the P25 transmission stops.

And no, I do not have priority, Close Call, WX alert or any other function enabled that would cause the "break".

Also, why does it sound as if the audio is phase shifting on the P25 channels? Meaning the pitch goes up and down.

Last night (11/19/09) in the basement garage of the Overland Park Holiday Inn near the Convention Center on Nall Ave., Ron Schwankl�s (Motorola Systems Technologist) truck was broken into and approximately $80-$100K worth of radios and test equipment was stolen.

The radios included XTS5000 and XTS2500 Portables as well as one new APX portable.
The radios were in 800MHz, UHF and VHF bands and were programmed specifically for the MARC-RAMBIS system and were being used for system testing.

Two new service monitors were also taken as well as a lot of other equipment.

Ron said he would send me the complete inventory for distribution when he got it put together.

In the mean time, I would think that an APX that shows up anywhere outside the usual sales channels would be a red flag.

Because of your knowledge and contacts with the local radio community I thought I would put out the alert so that you can spread the word to see if this equipment shows up anywhere.

Of course a police report has been filed but this is some very specialized equipment so unless the thieves are smart enough to ship it overseas it could very well become visible to someone in the local radio community.

Thanks much for the help and please let myself and/or the Overland Park Police know if anyone sees anything that raises a flag.

Guys i am playing again, i have setup as experimental a dual setup:

Left side is Mississauga Fire Dispatch channel Conventional
Right side is Peel Fire trunked system (Mississauga,Brampton and Caledon Fire)

Let me know what you guys think of it and how it sounds.. If this works out i will be one day doing this with Miss Trunked on one side and Brampton/Caledon Trunked on the other side

PRO-106 programming help

I recently aquired a PRO-106 scanner pre-programmed with 10 or so V-Scanner folders. I can load a folder that includes Colorado, but I don't know how to scan that folder. When I hit scan, it sits on Chandler, AZ. Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

PSA: Yaesu 2800s don't have memory banks

After my thread comparing MaxTracs against ham rigs a few days ago, I picked up a new Yaesu 2800 and was dismayed to learn that it has a significant issue with its usability: no memory banks.

What?

My VX-170 has memory banks which I rely on heavily. As it turns out, the 1802, 1900, and 2900 all have memory banks, but the 2800 does not. That may not mean much in normal 2M ham use, but for a railroad scanner it's a dealbreaker.

Fortunately, I was able to trade the 2800 to a friend for a like-new 1802. The difference in the value of the rigs was less than I'd have lost paying a restocking fee and return shipping to exchange the 2800.

So anyway, just a little PSA for those considering Yaesu mobile rigs for railfan use.

Hi Folks,
Was stumbling through the Service Search frequencies of my bcd396xt (I still can't figure how to program it properly!) when I came accross some members of a law enforcement surveillance team in my area chatting. These guys were exhibiting terrible radio discipline - calling themselves and other officers by first and last name, naming suspects and giving their location by naming streets by real name.
Clearly they thought they were on a secure network. It made for really interesting listening, especially because I knew the area they were in.
My question is, do I post the frequency in the appropriate area forum so other can enjoy it? If I post it, I worry that the officers will find out they are not on a secure net and change to one that is. Given their employer, I am sure they have the ability to do so.

BCD396XT audio thru ext. speaker?

Is there something i'm missing? It seems when I run the audio thru an external speaker the output seems cut or less strong? Could this be a mono vs stereo issue as i have an extension line to speaker from the radio, but even when connected directly the audio is barely recognizable...

Are there any mods or possibly any firmware updates that will enhance audio output?

I sent back the remote head and the classic 396 for service...hopefully it will be back before too long....

Hello. I have a question I hope anyone on here can answer for me.

I am just wondering if anyone on here would have or know the frequency that the CPR Police use. I used to have it. But I don't anymore. I am pretty sure the freq was 159.???. But can't remember. If anyone knows it. I would appreciate it. Because I would like to put it in my scanner and have it in there when the CPR Holiday Train comes in here to Chapleau next month (December). Because just incase they do some talking on their own channel.

Looking for some input on good rx below 500Khz. I am primarily one of those weirdos that listen to the static trying to pull out a few NDB beeps and DGPS beacons (and whatever else I run into down there) and hope to get my hands on something with good sensitivity down there. I currently use an altoids tin special to bump the range up to the 10mhz ham band but am now hoping to get a separate radio. I am looking at an R75 but figured I'd get some opinions first. None of my HF rigs include the freqs down there, but probably wouldn't excel there anyway. I'm not looking to break the bank, but want somewhat decent performance. Thoughts? Suggestions?
