Does anyone have info on how to program a WX channel to act as a pager channel in the TK 2170? I know the NWS uses a 1050KHz tone, but I cannot get the channel to go silent while scanning until the tone is broken.

Thanks

When I uploaded, the radio won't output the received audio stream. I've used the exact NAC (826), NAC F7E and the default NAC 293 - all with no luck. The LED will illuminate indicating traffic on the channel but it won't open. I know that there is voice traffic due to it being received on my BC796D scanner.

If I set the personality to Mixed Mode then the radio will output the audio stream but I only get the 'noise' of the data streams and still not any voice.

I'm using v5.2 of KPG-95DK software.
I swapped control heads thinking maybe the speaker but it did the same thing. Also tried an external speaker off of pins 2 and 6 but audio was still very faint. Also tried another 3 pin to 6 pin jumper. Could it somehow be stuck in mute mode? I tried reprogramming it too and nothing.

Any other suggestions?

Also I noticed it had a small jumper wire on the main board going from RST (where top board connects to lower board) to NC (where the control head plugs into board). My other 790s don't have this jumper wire.

Thanks,
We had the radios like this before but after telling the shop 3 times and them not doing it the company asked me to give it a shot.
Conventional Im fine with, done dozens of those, just worried about messing up the radio data for LTR system...

Hi All,

I just picked up a Kenwood TK-830g UHF from a friend out of his truck that was working properly in that vehicle. I have now installed it in my vehicle and I am having some issues. When I receive audio, it is VERY quiet... I have to turn up the external speaker all the way to even barely hear it. Also, when transmitting, I can touch a repeater and get a response back, but I am unable to transmit anything but static.

At first this sounded like a coax/mount/antenna issue, but I have tried a completely different piece of coax on a different mount with a different antenna and I get the same issue. I have also tried a different speaker and I get the same quiet Rx issue. I believe everything is installed correctly and the audio that is being received is very clear, it's just VERY quiet and Tx is useless. I have also checked the power connection and it appears to be good and has a good ground. Any ideas on why this might be occurring?

Thanks,

Tim

Hello all,

I am having a speaker problem with a Kenwood TK-890. Within the last year or so we seperated our 890 from a dash mount into a full featured dual head system. Everything was working great until about 2 weeks ago. We received our new unit and when I transferred the radio from one unit to the other we made the decision to switch from full featured heads to the basic heads with the speakers built in for a simple install and a cleaner look. Now I have reprogrammed the radio to accept the new heads and they both work great, however I have no sound from one of the heads. One works perfectly and the other has no sound. I have taken the heads back apart and double checked that the speakers were plugged in and no the rear accessory port but still no sound. I am running out of ideas and figured maybe someone here can tell me what I'm missing.

Any and all help is appreciated in advance.
Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, what can be done to fix the problem. This is odd because the radio has worked fine for quite a long time prior to this.
I would like an OEM antenna (or even an after-market helical antenna with the proper connector) that covers the full range of the radio with an acceptable SWR. Relm/BK Radio seem to be able to do it with:

KAA-0810 136-174 MHz Antenna for the Relm KNG-P150 Handheld

LAA-0818 136-174 MHz Antenna for the BK Radio VHF Series
(known as the standard "Bendix King" handhelds used by the USFS and BLM)

Does anyone know where I can get a wide band VHF antenna with an acceptable/safe SWR across the 136-174 MHz range with a connector for the Kenwood TK-2180? I would at least like 144-174 MHz so I could use it for the 2-meter amateur band and interoperability needs during EMS/SAR ops with the forestry folks. I know I can get separate antennas for various frequency ranges, but am not interested in that option.

BATTERY QUESTION:

Kenwood OEM batteries for the TK-2180 include:

KNB-31A Ni-Cd 1700 mAh (not an option because it's a Ni-Cd at only 1700 mAh)

KNB-32N Ni-MH 2500 mAh (I have a couple of these, but a memory effect is setting in despite proper discharge/recharge cycling)

KNB-33L Li-Ion 1700mAh (I have a couple of these, but they don't last long enough!)

Why can't Kenwood produce a battery pack that has the larger (but tolerable) form factor of the KNB-32N with a Li-Ion chemistry? A 2500 mAh Li-Ion battery pack would be ideal! Does anyone know of an after-market high-capacity Li-Ion battery for the TK-2180 radio?

-----

I'm frustrated that Kenwood can produce such a great radio with such terrible antenna and battery options...

Thanks in advance for any replies...

I have come into 3 handsets, 2 are TK-3200s (8 channel models) and one is a TK-3200L (15 channel model.) Whenever I tune any of the handsets to a channel above 3, all it does is put out a tone and flash the LED red/orange over and over. Also, I have noticed that I can't do any of the programming described in the manual that require you to hold buttons while you turn it on. When I try, it just acts like normal, power on beep and then nothing. It should flash the LED after a couple of seconds and announce things depending on what I am trying to do.

On the TK-3200L I was able to get it to do something with the reset-to-default where you hold all 3 buttons while powering on, but I didn't have the volume up high enough to hear what it said, and now it won't reset again; I can't change buttons, reprogram frequencies, or anything else. It's like that on all the handsets (well I say all, but one of the TK-3200s had a dead battery and is in the process of charging, but I am assuming it's going to be trouble like the other two.)

Does anyone know why the handsets are behaving this way? If I didn't give enough information, just let me know and I'll do what I can to give you what you need.

Oh by the way they do transmit on the 3 channels I can get to, and they sound pretty good too!

Thanks for any help you can give!

I am having issues with my mic audio on my 730 in this combo. Using the standard Kenwood hand mic , my audio on the 730 is extremely weak , but on the 630 side, the mic audio is great. Now if i switch to a kmc-9 desk mic , the audio is great on both the high band and low band sides. At first I thought I had a bad mic , so i tried another one and same issue.

Why would the audio on the 730 be extremely low and great on the 630 with the hand mic, but with the desk mic , the audio is good on both radio's .

Is it possible the the gain settings in the 730 are low , but with the lower impedance desk mic it makes up for it ?

could it possibly have something to do with the svr2000 that is also in the mix here ?
