So let me say this first, I don't smoke pot, I have in the past, as i am sure that alot of people here have, and i wont hear otherwise, because we all went through the stage as a kid.

So here is my issue/rant :

New york City, What a place, people come from all over the world, as tourist, and then, there are a**holes who come from far away places to protest, because they know that there is 12121231231 people who will see them protesting,

I was on wall st to be exact, i like taking a walk through there, and there were younger people, they were about 17-21 years old, they were from connecticut, they were part of the Christian's against drugs or something stupid, and they were bitching about people smoking pot and handing out flyers,

So lucky me, i get approached by a younger guy and girl, they hand me this stupid pamplet about how pot gets teenagers in trouble and the penalties should be stiffer, yada yada yada,

Personally for me, i rather see someone smoke 3 joints and drive then have someone pound 3 beers and drive, i am not sure about the statistics of pot and deaths,
But here is what i don't see,

No Anti Crack Commericals
No Anti Meth Commericals
No Anti Dope Commericals,
No Anti RX Drug Commericals,

But yet, everyday, these people are relentless in bashing pot and ciggs and nothing else, why is that?

I just don't see a problem with pot, im to lazy to research it, but i am damn sure it doesn't compare to what other drugs and alcohol do to people.
States legalize it for medical use, and NYPD sure doesn't give a flying F about it, i've seen them pull 1/4 ounces off people and just let them go on the subways,

If the big brother packages pot like ciggerettes and gave out cards that would allow you to purchase say, 5 packs a month with 20 joints a piece like they do with ciggs, then i think this country would make SO MUCH money, we would be out of the red in 15 years,

I just don't see why it's illegal when there is so much else to fight,
And i just don't see why we tie the court systems with small pot charges,

I just don't see the logic?

Responding to it, I provided a copy of the receipt when I exited the system at I-70. They in turn sent me a picture of a rental car (an image I can not open) from York St. with no further explaination. Sorry, I passed straight thru and paid my toll at the end and they will not be getting their dollar.

It took them seven months to get to me? I realize Colorado is broke, but they should try a different scam.

(Soapbox mode on)

What has happened to us as a people when we reach the point where a civilized exchange of ideas is apparently not possible?

I have always attempted to express myself clearly. I have attempted to refrain from meaningless arguments over inconsequential topics. Yet, in the past 12 months, I have repeatedly been called foul names (not on this forum) and suffered ad hominem attacks for simple questions or statements I have made. Questions and statements not concerning religious belief or political affiliation. Simple technical questions have been met with attacks aimed against the individual and the intellect. Opinions have been brutally assaulted.

Have we now lost the ability to disagree without being disagreeable?

Why do we call someone "dumb" or "stupid" when they ask a sincere question and only expect an honest answer or dare to express an opinion different from our own? Yes, some questions, statements and opinions may sound simplistic or moronic, but since when do we have the right to openly call someone an "imbecile" or a "moron"?

It isn't "cute", it is vicious, and it fully deserves a harsh response.

It has occurred to me recently that there are some individuals who search through the posts on this and other forums just looking for the opportunity to pounce on an absolute stranger with a total disregard for civility and common decency.

Is this the direct result of the anonymity provided by the Internet or is there something darker here?

Why are rudeness, arrogance and hostility now considered "cool" and normal? Have we sunk that low? Are we de-evolving, returning to the trees? Do we show no respect for others because we have no respect for ourselves? Are we so angry over the lack of control of our own lives that lashing out against anyone over anything at any time is cathartic?

After the Rodney King incident, the phrase he asked became a standing joke: "Why can't we all just get along?"

I believe I have discovered the answer:

We don't want to.

My boss chewed me out so I'm gonna cut you off in traffic.
Your co-worker said something that really hurt you so you are going to flip someone off for absolutely no reason.
The last customer was a total jerk so I'm gonna get some back and treat the next one like crap.

And lets not even get started on politics!

A society is composed of individuals who tacitly agree to live by certain standards of conduct. When those standards become the butt of jokes and are openly ridiculed and disobedience is flaunted, it is not an indicator of maturity or a measure of freedom, but a sign of selfishness and childishness. The refusal to accept responsibility for our own actions is social suicide. Shamefully, our social philosophy is no longer "Do what is right" but has become "Don't get caught". Laws are seen as something to be ignored or gotten around. They are not perceived as safeguards for our protection but are seen as roadblocks to our fun. The all to often retort to any rebuke, exquisite with its bad grammar, is "Your not the boss of me". The problem with this attitude is it leads to self centered decisions based on the feelings of the moment. That is the response of a two year old child. Regardless of what your teacher or old professor tells you, moral relativism leads to a total collapse of the society with freedom for none. Besides, he only believes in moral relativism until effects his life and possessions. Don't believe that? Try cheating on one of HIS exams or stealing HIS car. People begin to see themselves as the ultimate moral authority and they want to do whatever they wish, to the detriment of the society and anyone else they happen to come into contact with.

And that results in what we call "chaos" and, in the end, no one survives that uninjured.

As I see it, we have two choices:

1) Continue down this slippery slope of self indulgence and irresponsibility and risk watching everything around us dissolve into a meaningless sludge of amoral selfishness

or

2) Embrace civility, relearn the Golden Rule and realize that freedom and liberty are not a license to do anything we want to do simply because we feel like doing it.

Every choice in this life has consequences and sometimes, those can be quite painful. The sooner we learn that, the greater our country's odds will be of surviving this mess. Right now, we are on the brink of a social chasm and I fear our descendants will suffer terribly because of the poor choices we are making right now.
