I tried searching for this, because I thought someone must have done it before, but alas no luck.

In looking to reduce total space required to operate a computer that does nothing but stream audio to the RR servers, I remembered the SheevaPlug that was announced a ways back.

While some people might be able to find a used desktop with a reasonable amount of power for $99, this seemed like too good of an option to passed up.

For those unaware, the SheevaPlug has a large community behind it (plugcomputer.org) and with good reason. Fitting a x86 1.2gHz machine with 512mb of ram, USB, gigabit ethernet and a flash card reader into something the size of a DC power wall wart makes it seem like a good idea for a way to stream audio from a scanner.

Because these units (can) come with Ubuntu pre-installed on them, I figure it won't be much work to install darkice and start slinging them, but I had a couple questions before I went ahead and ordered one to try it.

Are there good USB audio adapters that work with linux with little to no configuration?

Has anyone installed darkice (or any audio streamer) onto an embedded device over a network. It would be no problem installing it on a device with a GUI (or at least a monitor) but by design this unit has to be configured and controlled via SSH.

Here is the SheevaPlug (what I would want to use):

I think it would be a popular feed since there has been a lot of crime in that College campus area lately making news. This is the Milwaukee Police District 1 and 6 feed in Milwaukee County.
I am always online and could help the person test it if they are having problems.

Folks,

For our Web player platform. we have moved back to the previous player platform that we have always used, the "Wimpy" player. yes, that really is the name! :)

"Wimpy" finally updated their player to resolve some of the crashing issues. Established users will see that we have updated the skins... but it is the same player.

If you have problems, concerns, or feedback, please let us know in this thread. We are especially interested in hearing if the Web player crashes your browser.

Thanks, and most importantly... Have fun!!

I have two feeds-two radios feeding different PCS-one stays on and the other keeps shutting down every six or eight hours. I think I can rule out DSL since I use it for the other feed and internet without problems. I get a message that virtual memory is low on the PC and I guess that is the problem. PC has 2.48 MB of RAM. Other things seem to work on this PC if they aren't memory hogs. Is this not enough memory or is there a problem with OddcastV3 possibly? Any ideas welcome, solutions very welcome!

I am a feed provider. I cannot get my broadcast to run continuously for more than maybe a few hours at a time. The RR webPlayer stops working with a message "error loading mp3". Windows media player stops working as well. They always come right back up after restarting the feed (simply by pressing play) I'm working on doing some more definitive troubleshooting but it will take a while. This problem occurs in 3 separate locations/computers/networks that i know of.
Whenever my feed is down, I DO get the emails from RR letting me know, as well as when it comes back up. This problem occurs at all times, day or night. I have not yet been sucessful in having the feed play continuously overnight.
Could my network be glitching somewhere for just enough time to kill the feed but not long enough for RR to be notified or something? Thanks in advance for your help

I now see a new feed has been added however its showing offline which is titled: Hunt County Fire & EMS.

Was there a mistake and is my feed being canned?

I plan (or had planned) to Add Greenville PD, Grayson Co. Law and DPS back to the feed when My Pro-106 finds its way home from the Radio Shack service center.

I was thinking that it would be really nice to have a list, maybe on the main page of the live scanner list, where you see the national map. Below the map yo have a list of the newest feeds. Would it be possible to add another list like this, showing feeds with active "News and Feed Alerts" status? That way you could easily find feeds where something is going on, rather than having to click on each individual state to look for breaking events. Just an idea, if there is already a page like this that has eluded me, please let me know.

Most of the issues are coming from people who use laptops or computers/monitors with internal speakers. Is there any way (from my end) that I can increase the volume for these folks?

As far as my equipment set-up goes, I'm using a Radio Shack Pro-106 (volume is positioned in the 12 O'clock position). RR Oddcast is the stream software in use (volume bar is positioned far right).

I tested the feed out earlier using my laptop, and confirmed there was indeed an issue. I had the volume maxed out and still could barely hear the audio.

Thanks in advance.
I have made sure that all the automatic updates are turned off and have also checked the power settings to make sure nothing shuts down. I have other boxes on my network and none of them have had this happen. Has anyone else experienced this? Also I manually do my virus definition updates so I don't believe this is an issue.

Possibly a problem with the NEW Web Player

I started getting reports from listeners about the new web player. Several have stated the audio is unintelligable and choppy. I was able to duplicate the problem with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome (no other browsers checked) by doing the following:

1. Open browser to Madison County, Indiana (IN) Live Police, Fire, and EMS Scanners on RadioReference.com (my feed)
2. Wait appx 2-3 minutes and start looking at the display to the right of the time counter and notice that "Buffering 100%" flashes on and off almost constantly.
3. The audio is choppy and it seems the longer this continues to play the choppier it gets and the delay between the live and RR feed increases.

This occurs on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome (no other browsers checked) since the New web player was added. I have not had reports from any other listeners who use a player other than the web player.

Has anyone else noticed this possible problem or could there be a problem with just my feed. I have not changed any feed provider settings since the transfer from SA.

I use a linux box running Ubuntu 9.10 and darkice to supply the feed.

I had a RR message at 3:30 this morning that my feed had not been seen in 15 minutes. I looked and sure enough I had a update, update itself and reboot. Which promptly canned Scannercast and upon restart did not allow scanner cast to start back thus My feed was down from 3:15 (ish) to 7:45 this wonderful COLD morning. and sure nuff, Automatic updates is STILL set to ask for MY permission before installing.

I think its time for a MAC!

I get complaints all the time. I have changed cables, reloaded my OS. Deleted and resinstalled all my audio drivers. My feed was working fine and then one day the audio went to hell. I had it one day sounding fine, I tested it on my other computer by listening. Then when I got home from work about 9 hours later, again it was garbage. I have gone from front ports to rear ports to no avail. Can some one who runs a pro 96 with a live audio feed give me a hand?
Thanks Guys!

How about adding the ability for a feed owner to authorize trusted users to change/update the News and Feed Alerts status for their feed(s)?

Each feed owner would have the option of setting up an authorized list of those accounts who could access a limited control panel for their feed(s), where those users would then be able to change/update the News and Feed Alerts status, nothing else. The list would be unique per feed, and need not be the same authorized users for each feed a person runs. I can see this coming in very handy for local/regional feeds where you have a network of friends who monitor at various times during the day and night. If the ability to update those alerts is shared among multiple users, you're likely going to get much better and more timely usage out of that feature.

Whether or not this is even possible without a major re-write of the code, I have no idea, but I figure it's worth throwing out there.
