Some Excerpts from 11/19/09 article at SMFD welcomes dispatch operators

"Just a few weeks before its dispatch center goes live for the first time in nearly three years, the Santa Monica Fire Department on Wednesday welcomed the people who will be responsible for fielding the emergency calls for the city. The first class for the reactivated center includes a communications supervisor and seven communications operators, coming with a diversity of experiences working in dispatching, some for private security companies, others for public entities, including the SMFD.

"The dispatch center is expected to come online sometime during the first two weeks of December.

"Challenged by a staffing shortage and outdated technological equipment, the center closed in early 2007 when the SMFD decided to merge dispatch operations with the Los Angeles Fire Department Regional Dispatch System to improve efficiency. The change, however, led to problems, including confusion caused by emergency calls that came from addresses that existed both in Santa Monica and Los Angeles. After nearly two years, the City Council in January decided to reactivate the old communications center in the Public Safety Facility, agreeing to address the issue that led to its deactivation in the first place, including staffing and equipment...."

And from there it goes into some specifics.

Hi all,
I just bought the BCD396XT after 20 years of using the same Radio Shack handheld scanner. This is a new ballgame to me alltogether. I was about to get started in the right direction with RR and FreeScan when it hit me.... maybe someone from my area, Orange County, has a radio I might clone. I am interested in listening to mostly Law Enforcement, Fire and Hospitals, EMT and Paramedics from the Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley and Orange County. If someone might have a file they have saved to disk or something that could be e-mailed to me for use with FreeScan, I would love to know!

RR has been a great resource and I appreciate the effort by everyone involved for bringing this to the masses.

Thanks for any pearls of wisdom to be shed apon this thread!

Hi All – I’m new to this forum – not new to scanning but new to digital and my Pro-106. I have been able to program a lot of local freqs in my area – Simi, but unable to get SVPD trunked system working. I have found a lot of the information here on the RR Forum – what a great sight – I’m using the Win500 program but I’m not sure I’m using the information I have correctly – I have not been able to receive any PD broadcasts other that on FM. I’ve been searching this forum for similar threads and I feel pretty certain that other have had the difficulties that I’m experiencing.

Can anyone direct me to where I may find instructions on programming the Pro-106. I’m hopeful once I understand how it all works together I’ll be able to program it to work.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
I just applies and paid for my GMRS license on the FCC website (very easy). Now what do i do, there is a lot of chatter on a lot of channels and i'm not trying to hog anybody's airspace or stumble on any police frequencies. I bought these radios primarily in the event of an earthquake so that i could communicate with my family if we were in separate places. Whats the best frequency to lock into the radios in that event.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are some excellent maps of California which show which areas are covered by which CHP offices and the associated frequencies/color channels.

I am wondering if anyone knows of any map of the city of LA which shows the borders of each division. Anyone have one or know of one?

Anyone listening to San Bernadino City (System 10)?

I am getting strange performance on the system - the scanners (a Pro-160, Pro-162, BCT-15, and 346xt) stop on a channel, and then switch frequency back and forth trying to id the TG, (and there is no rhyme or reason to which TG it might be - Fire, PD, even the Trash guys). And.. it doesn't happen all the time.

It also occurs regardless of antenna - a discone 35 feet up, stock antennas, or a stubby.

On the Pro-95, it sounds like the transmission is coming in off frequency (fuzzy sounding, voice not intelligible - like a nearby xmtr bleeding over). Unitrunker and Trunk88 don't show anything out of the ordinary as far as frequencies or TG's are concerned (it will show a TG and user ID, etc.), when it occurs, so it is baffling, to say the least.

Los Angeles County supervisors voted today to spend $6.2 million to upgrade the county Fire Department’s communication system.

The department’s chief deputy, Daryl Osby, said the move will allow their radio system to better link to other critical agencies -- including the L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Forest Service -- during a fire.

The decision to upgrade was driven by a 2013 deadline imposed by the Federal Communications Commission for public safety agencies to migrate to new radio frequencies.

“Our hope is that this new equipment will roll out well before the deadline,” Osby said.

I often hear "LA, Area 23 requesting LAFD Paramedics for a injury at blah, blah, blah beach..." (obviously the blah, blah, blah is so I can get to the question) on LACoFD Blue 3.

Does anybody have a listing of where the "Area xx" units are assigned. It appears they are the LACoFD beach lifeguards, but I have never seen a listing of their radio call signs/assignments, so I figured I would ask the experts.

If anyone has a list, or knows where to find it, could you post a link?

Thanks!!!
