To start, I have information that College Station has rebanded the 866-868 frequencies down to 851 to 853. I am in Longview until next Friday, so can anybody confirm this before I update the CS TRS page?

Brazos and Washington Counties, along with the cities of Brenham, Bryan, College Station, as well as Texas A&M University are in the process of rebanding from 800 trunked to 700 trunked with the help of funding from the Public Safety Interoperability Grant and matching jurisdictional funds. The process is expected to be complete in early 2010. The new system will also link with the TX-WARN (Teaxs Wide Area Network) which was once known as the Harris County Regional Radio System. This will replace current 800 and VHF systems currently in use in those respective jurisdictions, and will facilitate full interoperable communications with agencies already on the Harris County system.

Also worthy of mention, most of the regional VHF systems are phasing out wide-band in favor of narrow band in compliance with FCC mandates that take effect in 2013.

This afternoon there has been no traffic heard over my feed or on my hand held for Round Rock. It appears that the scanners, a 996t and a 396xt aren't finding any active control frequencies on the Williamson simulcast tower.

Travis county and Pflugerville along with APD are coming in loud and clear, so I know the equipment is working. I have checked that nothing is locked out and squelch is set to 0. The 996t hasn't been touched other than to turn it off last night to save my battery backup from beeping during a 30min power outage. After power was restored I turned it back on and restarted my server and feed. It was working fine this morning, and now this afternoon I get silence.

Any ideas guys? I would blame propagation but I get simulcast 2 loud and clear. Could they of moved to a different simulcast tower? I'm not that familiar with the actual Motorola system they use and don't know what would be involved in switching towers. I will be checking other towers for the missing traffic in the morning, but any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,

Yeah, I know, I live in Lousyanna  :(. Here's the deal. I'm a ham radio operator for 27+ years. I've also been *active* for some 27 years as a NOAA-trained Skywarn spotter. Lately, I've been checking in to the 147.150 (+600 kHz & 186.2 tone) Bossier City Marshal's Emergency Task Force, Medical Group 7, & ARES Groups Net on Tuesday night at 7 PM. It's on the Bossier City Amateur's Radio Association's repeater. This is a FEMA net for training purposes and was well used last week when we had 27 confirmed, active, tornado's in the 7 parish area of Northwest Louisiana. Sadly, we had one fatality, a man in a pickup ran into a tree as it fell and the rain was so heavy, he could not see out of his windshield. :(

Now, North Louisiana is finally & slowly changing all agencies over to the LAWIN (Louisiana Wireless Inoperative Network) with P-25. I happen to be collecting agencies within a 250 mile radius of Shreveport, LA, for a database, of sorts for those in the Skywarn (Trained) and FEMA-certified group in our area. I'm in-process of moving and setting up my shack/monitoring post at the Lake house. Because of some medical problems, soon I won't be able to drive, so I will hope to be a dispatch of sorts, passing on any information I hear on VHF low-band, VHF Hi-band, UHF lo-band and 700mhz to both the K5SHV, Skywarn repeater and the K5BMO Marshal's repeater. :D.

I'm wondering, aloud, if anyone has heard any scuttlebutt, about when East Texas/Central Texas/North Texas is going to 700 MHZ?

ANY information would be greatly appreciated. And Yes, I know some of Central and North Texas have already made the switchover.

GOD BLESS,

Howdy All,

I'm looking to try scanning for the first time, so I'm brand new. I've been doing a lot of reading about it, particularly trying to decide which scanner should be my first purchase.

I live in the Cy-Fair district in NW Harris county, near SH 249 (Tomball Pkwy) and FM 1960, zip code 77069 if it helps. I work daily down in the Med Center in Hoston, zip code 77030.

My original interest was scanning police transmissions in my home area (Cy-Fair) but now that I've found out what all can be scanned, I'm amazed and would love to scan it all, including transmissions in Houston especially while I'm commuting.

From the FAQ I got the recommendation to ask folks in my area what sort of scanners they use and recommend, which makes great sense.

I've figured out I need at least a trunking scanner, and I think a handheld would be best for taking it on the road. Right now to me the two best choices seem to be the Uniden BC346XT or BCD396XT (digital). Because I am new to scanning and because of the cost I am leaning toward the non-digital BC346XT. From what I've read the only entity in my area which uses digital systems is the Texas DPS, so I'm thinking a digital system may be overkill. Of course I am sure that over time more and more transmissions will go digital, but I don't know how fast that is happening in my area and I'm considering that by the time I'd need to get a digital scanner there may be new encoding systems, trunking systems, etc. and the BCD396XT may be obsolete by then.

Another option is to purchase a used scanner, and there is a classified ad on this site offering a functional BCD396T for sale which is attractive to me since it is priced in between the new BC346XT and BCD396XT and is digital. However, the BCD396XT seems to have a lot of really big improvements over the BCD396T, but I don't know how much they would mean to someone new to scanning.

So what do you folks use? Are there many digital transmissions in Cy-Fair or around Houston? Do you have any recommendations for me?

Thanks very much in advance! I had no idea there was such an amazing community of radio scanning enthusiasts, but my uncle's a ham so I should have guessed based on the ham community.

By the way, I'm pretty technically inclined so I don't think that working with the technology will be much of a problem / barrirer for me.

Thanks again,

John

Calling All Central Texans!

This weekend, at Randolph Air Force Base, I'd like to see people's interest in a little meetup. Last year davidbond21 and myself spent the day at Lackland AFB (Saturday I believe) and saw many scanheads. This year I'd like to suggest a meetup on Saturday. davidbond21 and I plan on getting there pretty early on Saturday (gates open), to take some good pictures of the static displays. I'll have probably 2 scanners on my hip (nerdy, I know), I imagine davidbond will also.

Here's the link to the schedule of events. Blue Angels will be in Jacksonville, FL (they were at Lackland Airfest last year), and the Thunderbirds will be in Homestead, FL, so this year's scanning might involve some ingenuity. I'll be searching some threads and updating this with frequencies to watch (based on the schedule).

First, here's a link (well, the link is on the blog page), to the Montiroing Times' 2009 Air Show Guide.

I'd like to meetup after lunch if that's alright with everybody. I'm going to make sure to bring a foldout stool this year. That gives people the option to eat at home if they'd like to avoid carnival food. Should be a good weekend (Sunny with a high of 76 both days- but this is Texas). Let me know what ya'll think.

Most Frequencies in Database Obsolete

The more I try frequencies I find in both the database and the lengthy Taylor Co. database, the more I find that 99% of them are dead, no longer activity on them. Why they aren't updated more often, I don't know.

My most recent "dead find" was for Fedex in Abilene, 859.86250Mhz. I heard them years ago, back in the '90's on an 857 range, so I really thought this would be a good find. Wrong. Nothing there, zip, nada.

I wonder why databases aren't kept more up to date? I doubt I'll be entering any more frequencies I find. I already know I will more than likely, hear nothing.

I have found a frequency from searching on 154.085, that seems to be either state school or a prison repeater. I will hear something about head counts now and then and other chatter sometimes, so guess that's good. As most of these database frequencies are out of date, does anyone here know of a more up to date database or listing of "used now" frequencies?

Thanks-

Howdy from Corpus Christi, TX...

Thank goodness some of our PD is in analog format with old fashion frequencies.
But not all of them...In fact the good ones are all HEXed out.

So what in the world to do...

Im looking at the talk groups and 90% are classified as "A". Analog. Thats good since "D" would mean ProVoice. And my unit wont pick that up.

But here is what it looks like.

DEC AFS Mode Alpha Tag Description Tag

273 02-021 A PATROL-1 "A Alpha Units

So I am wondering. How would I type that DEC number (273) and AFC (02-021) into a decimal frequency?

On the HEX DECIMAL CONVERTER it reads as follows:

Decimal 273 = 111 HEXADECIMAL... that is is still greek to me lol.....

Not sure what to do because there are a lot of channels I'd love to monitor on my Uniden APCO25 BCD996XT scanner. Robstown, TX PD is also formatted that way also !

Any insight to that?
THANKS so much.
JIMMY

I added the talk 859.46250 frequency but did not hear anything when I knew Hurst was out on a medical call. I noticed this the day of the Walmart indecent in Hurst this week and could only hear the Police. I have also not heard anything on FTW dispatch for Hurst, but I do not always listen to that.

Does anyone know if Hurst Fire changed to a trunked system and what it is?

Sorry if this was brought up already, but I did not see anything new searching Hurst.

Thanks,

How are the 700MHz overlays proposed for D/FW, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston supposed to work? My assumption is that existing or proposed P25 systems will use 700 MHz overlays as linking systems and that mobiles, will generally, not operate directly on the overlays within their own coverage areas, rather, they will stay on their own frequencies unless they move outside their coverage area.

In other words, a unit within his own coverage area, say Irving, will switch to an "Interop" channel and the overlay will carry that traffic to other systems in the region. Am I on or off base here? Say an Irving mobile wants to talk to Plano, the Irving unit will switch to an interop channel and the 700 MHz overlay will handle the link to Plano. This works fine until that Irving unit is chasing somebody into Plano and the Irving freqs will no longer be accessible. What happens to the mobile unit? Does he switch directly to the 700 Mhz overlay while chasing? This would seem the logical choice.

Is there a technical discussion of how these overlays are supposed to work?

Thanks,
With that change, the DPS move to P25, and all the rebanding, I guess it's time for me to move up to a Uniden BCD996XT. It'll be interesting to see how Uniden's new ESK capability will pull in the analog signals on the San Antonio/Bexar County EDACS system.
