Looking for some input on good rx below 500Khz. I am primarily one of those weirdos that listen to the static trying to pull out a few NDB beeps and DGPS beacons (and whatever else I run into down there) and hope to get my hands on something with good sensitivity down there. I currently use an altoids tin special to bump the range up to the 10mhz ham band but am now hoping to get a separate radio. I am looking at an R75 but figured I'd get some opinions first. None of my HF rigs include the freqs down there, but probably wouldn't excel there anyway. I'm not looking to break the bank, but want somewhat decent performance. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I've been spending about a month considering what I want to get to replace my aging Sony ICF-2010 as my main "casual listener."

First I looked for the Drake SW8, but post 1996 versions are near impossible to find.

Then I considered the Sat 800, but all the bad press about the quality issues drove me away.

Then I was convinced to try an Eton E1XM. Quality concerns here, too, made want to avoid used, so I got a new one from Universal Radio. It arrived with scratches all around the case, and a tuning knob that was off center. Performancewise, it pulled in nothing (although this may have been unfair, since I was trying it out during a week when nothing can in through anything). Even if it hadn't looked bad, the flimsy looking construction and poor audio quality drove me away, even though feature-wise, it's incredible.

So I went back and looked for Sat 800s. Prices on Ebay for non-pawnshop models were going up into the $350-$450 range. I almost gave up when I happened to chance upon an for one on Craigslist, located only 25 minutes from my house.

To make a long story short, I picked up a 2002, original-owner Sat 800 in like-new condition. Not a scratch on it. Came with original box, manual, headphones and power supply. The seller even threw in the 2008 Passport to World Radio book. All for $280.

Haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but even with the whip it seems to pull in much better than the Eton did (again, this may be due to propogation), and the audio quality is amazing. It's built like a tank. The only thing that bugs me is that it doesn't have "fast tuning," but since I'm going to be using it for mostly SW rather than SSB I'll just fill up the frequency banks.

If this thing doesn't break down, it'll be a keeper, and the 2010 will gone on the sell block.

Has anyone tested an Icom R75 against Ic-7000? What i have seen they both look impressive. Does anyone use the remote control mod and remote for the R75? If so, about how far away can you get from the receiver before it stops working? I am guessing if you have a stronger good remote, it should work good and maybe across the room.

Not sure whether it's my region, the change in season, or something else, but I've never experienced such deadness on the air until recently.

It totally put me off the idea of getting another SW receiver. I had bought a new Eton E1, but it arrived with scratches and a misaligned tuning wheel. I was going to exchange when I decided to really try it out. I did, with both the whip and attached to my simple longwire antenna attached to a PAR EF SWL.

The thing picked up just about nothing over 7Mhz. No WWV at 10 or 15. Even below it, there were fewer stations on there. Until recently, the 9500-12000Khz range was popping with SW stations. Admittedly, mostly Radio Moscow, Radio China and evangelics, but still popping nonetheless.

But before blaming the radio, I also tried my Sony ICF-2010 (whip only) and my JRC NRD 545 (attached to the same longwire). Both of these were dead over 9Mhzl. With the 545 I couldn't even pull in the SSB CW signals in the beginning of the 7Mhz band.

In any case, I ended up returning the Eton. Just not worth it.

Now, I realize the change of seasons means that higher frequencies will be harder to receive, but I was able to pull in nearly everything from 7-11 Mhz when I put up my longwire last March.

Anyone have a similar situation?

Hi folks, I've gotten into a days-long discussion with a coworker and we cannot find an answer. It began when I mentioned to him the massive size of longwave broadcast transmitters, and the gargantuan amount of power consumed by them. Examples not only including the European broadcast stations, but also the US Navy's NAA station.

My cohort (not into radios but does have a PhD in a related area) replied something to the effect of "That can't be. Long waves are lower energy so they must be easier to send, energy-wise. Higher frequency stations should require more power than low frequency ones."

I've proposed several reasons to my coworker, including the size of antenna required, but he keeps coming back with the same argument about the low energy in the waves themselves. So I've been trying to find the answer -- Why low frequency stations require the incredible amount of power that they do.

Does anybody know the answer?

Doing some channel surfing this morning before I left for work, I see someone is making a movie called 'Pirate Radio' that is supposed to be based on actual events, according to the announcement. It's supposed to be out Nov.13

The snippets suggest that the movie will deal with the British or Dutch offshore radio scene in the 70s. How close to reality this will be is open to debate, I suppose, unless this is going to be some sort of docu-drama. Those of us that were at the last couple of Winterfests in Pennsylvania got a good dose of the reality of this scene, as there were some very informative presentations (with lots of slides and even some off-air recordings) on the subject.
The new protections built into the bill include the following:

* Protection for third-adjacent channel full-power FM stations providing reading services for the blind
* Providing protection for FM translator input signals from interference from new LPFM stations
* For a year after a new LPFM goes on the air, it must broadcast notices that any listener who experiences interference to another FM station or FM translator from this new LPFM should report that interference to the LPFM station. In the event that interference is reported:
o The LPFM must notify the FCC and the third-adjacent channel station that is getting interference
o The LPFM station must address the interference that arises
o The FCC is charged with looking for ways to assist the LPFM in remediating interference, including allowing co-location of the LPFM at the same tower site as the FM station or FM translator to which interference is being caused
o The FCC will investigate allegations of interference from an FM broadcaster or FM translator, no matter how far that interference is from the station, and even if the interference is to mobile reception

The 909 didn't work well at all for me. The 7600 was close to the 1103 but not as good. The E100 was junk in my area. The 1103 did the best for shortwave and MW listening. I am a casual listener and want some good suggestions.

Thanks for any information. Also looking to buy a used 1103 if you know where one might be.
