Can you be more Specific??

What Agency. Homeland is like saying DOJ

TSA
FAM
INS/ICE
SS
FPS
USCG
Customs
FEMA
National Guard
Civil Air Patrol
[Agencies, obtained from Wikipedia]

You are best to search the WIKI here, as many of the channels have not changed, in years.

Spend sometime searching 162-174, 406-420, 138-144, 148-150.8
make notes. Spend a few weeks and then post your findings.

Not every channel is used every-day/week/month.
Some might pop-up for 5 min's each week, or a long major op.
Others, it's hit-or-miss.

I read where you said you were not hearing anything. My first thought was your receiver conditions. What are you using? What antenna? Coax? What is around you for VHF transmitters and FM stations. If you are using a new GRE scanner, do you have an FM broadcast filter? On a clear frequency how many signal bars do you see on the display?

If you live anywhere near NYC you should hear something! But I know what a high RF area NNJ is and how it can trash a scanner receiver without good filtering. When I was up there I ran filters (modded ham radio diplexers and triplexers) to minimize images and overload. Then I would look for a location with a vantage point that had visibility "over" NYC, but not near any transmitters that would overload the scanner. The Palisades rest stops were great! I heard so much there. The best!

Put in the well know (on the wiki) national freqs for the major agencies. DEA, BATFE, USSS, CBP (it is a national plan!), and USMS. You have to hear something, although these are P25 digital so you will need a digital scanner. If you still can't hear anything, you have a receiver problem and may need filtering. The "attenuator" doesn't fix a thing...filtering does.

Good luck.

Phil

No need to cut-n-paste the whole list [PS 100.0 Hz has been replaced by P25 in most of the Country]

2006 Chris Parris List [Replace 100.0 with P25 in most Areas]
2007 CP MT Update [Again most 100.0 has been replaced with P25]

The OP needs to be more specific on what he has programmed so we can help him out.

I can say I programmed in some FBI Channel [167.5625] and I hear nothing. True. This is a Simplex Only and rarely used, except on a major OP/Surv.

As others have attempted too, his Antenna, Exact Location and what he has programmed [PL, DPL, NO PL, P25 Only] will help us help him.

[Bill, putting in for his Dentistry Merit Badge, after this one]

Well now I can understand why he is not hearing anything. Essex County with a non-digital hand-held scanner using a "stock" rubber duck antenna in a region that has converted to nearly 100% digital will get you next to nothing.

If you really want to hear fed coms, get a digital scanner and a good antenna (like a discone or Niljon Super-M). Get it above the roof in the clear and use the best coax you can get. If you are near major VHF transmitters you may need a filter. Put the common freqs from the Wiki links in and you should hear something. As Bill said, search the gov bands to find other active freqs. A newer scanner with NAC decode will help to identify who you are listening to.

Without that, you are wasting your time and will hear next to nothing.

Phil
