It's a rarely used simplex frequency called "Channel 17" in Chicago for casual car to car communication. I found it years ago. Like any obscure federal frequency, being in the right place at the right time is what it takes.

I thought maybe it is used by USSS elsewhere.

I heard a bit of in the clear P25 years ago with GW was in town. Among other things, one call that was worthy of note came in late at night to say that "Tempo" (First Lady Laura Bush) wanted a cup of tea sent up. That was cool.

Sadly, our current president doesn't visit Arizona much so I rarely get the chance to listen to the USSS freq's. They also change them up quite often so the best bet when the POTUS is in town is to just search the usual federal bands and see what you get. The local highway patrol usually works the motorcade detail too, and that's usually pretty informative and in the clear (at least here in AZ).

If I were scolded by Gov. Brewer, I too would not often visit AZ. :>]

Was the freq. ever referred to as a name or mil phonetic?

Sigh.... yes, she's a dingbat - please do not judge this beautiful state by the idiots who run it.

I haven't listened to USSS in so long, I honestly don't remember. I'll have to try scanning them again next time someone they protect shows up in town and see if I hear anything like that. Lately the only activity I've been able to monitor that isn't encrypted has been Border Patrol on VHF/P25 and what sounded like possiblly DEA or US Marshals tailing someone near my house on analog simplex in the UHF band. Other than that, the fed bands have been pretty quiet (or heavily encrypted) the few times I've tried listening to 'em.

Around hear (Northeastern MA) you can hear units checking in to "Boston" every moring around 7-8. I am not exactly sure how the process works but it is a CL/ENC mix on USSS Tango. On a few other rare occasions I have heard simplex traffic as well. "Lets stop at dunks..." ect...I believe this repeater freq might also have "vote scan" enabled letting units in the area aware of its presents.

On several occasions during the recent election I picked up Oscar, Sierra, and Charlie in the Manchester NH area when POTUS/Romney was in town (one advantage of living near a swing state). During one of Romney's trips units were operating in the clear on Charlie referring to him as "Javelin".
