I've been doing some searching with my Pro96 today. And got some unreadable voice comms from a frequency that turns out to be IRS 167.00 since I found it in search mode,I put it in my Pro96. I've not heard any activity on it,since. Just seconds ago encrypted noise came over the radio, but no p.l tone. I think this frequency might be an analog frequency During the period of encrypted communications the FM indicator on my Pro96 has not switched to D. to indicate it's a digital frequency.

Keep an ear on that one, Steve. But I can confirm that 167.0000 MHz is use as part of the Justice IWN trunked system. I've heard it used in the Tacoma area and Bellingham as a voice channel for the trunked system.

Follow up posting. I heard brief, clear voice with a p.l of l73.8 displaying

Interesting, Steve.

Did you catch anything they were talking about? Just trying to see if this was really the IRS or someone else. Maybe some units from out-of-town who don't have radios on the IWN, or perhaps some friends from north of the border!

Just FYI, the IRS is not the only agency to use this frequency. The Department of Interior, specifically the Bureau of Land Management has some allocations here, too!

FCC use to operate on 167.0500 (base to mobiles). Possible adjacent channel interferance?

In the old days before the DoJ-Federal LE trunked network began to emerge, the IRS used the following frequencies:

IRS CID VHF
Ch1 165.95 direct
Ch2 167.00 car-to-base
Ch3 165.95/167.00 repeater
Ch4 166.4625 Treasury department common

IRS CID UHF
Ch1 418.225 direct
Ch2 418.225/414.7 repeater
Ch3 418.175 direct
Ch4 418.175/418.725 repeater
Ch5 415.00 direct
Ch6 415/418.25 repeater
Ch7 418.25 talk around

IRS Internal Unit
Ch1 166.00 direct
Ch2 167.10 car-to-base
Ch3 166.4625 Treasury department common
Ch4 166.00/167.1 repeater

I can't find or recall what their CTCSS use was.

Almost everyone of those UHF frequencys are still in use by the DEA, in fact I think DEA has always been the primary user of those frequencys with the understanding that IRS had acess to them as well.

Many of those IRS repeaters are still alive and kicking too but nobody ever uses them. What a waste of good equipment.
