If I wanted to set my scanner to search between two freqs that encompass the Fed band, what would they be? I know it's like 160Mhz or something like that..

The ones that we used were always from 136-144 & 148-151. I know that some agencies have a small segment up in the 160/170 range, but we never used those.

173.2000 - 173.4000 can and will be assigned for Film and Water departments. Just a heads up. Often any telemetry heard in this range is a local gov water dept.

ETA: Corrected the range

The real good stuff is between 167-168 MHz :)
Also don't forget the UHF fed band. I mostly search 417-420 MHz but you could extend it from 413 or so.

136-144 and 148-151 would be military land mobile (FM) or aircraft ops (AM).

Federal agencies primarily operate in the 162-174 VHF range. As already mentioned, fed agencies (i.e. DEA, USPS law enforcement, etc.) also use a lot of UHF.

I thought military was federal. Sorry for the confusion.

I have not made comparisons and done research in quite awhile. But " Back When" when I was seriously a die-hard " Commo Junkie "....This is what "I" had noticed.

Late 80's - Early 90's.....Most Federal Agency mobiles were VHF , and portables were UHF. I only knew of few instances in crossbanding.

Agencys in which had guards / police , that used commo, and had no vehicles or exterior patrol and worked - "In house" used UHF freqs ( Ex = Public Debt - Small VA centers - US Military Ammo and Maintenance Depots ).

Agencys that had a large area to police / patrol had both UHF and VHF radios. All the maintanence / mechanical gurus inside the perimeter ...again used UHF radios ; on both simplex and duplex. Mostly simplex...and it was not encrypted.

VHF, as I noticed sometime ago, was more common with base, fixed and mobile repeaters.

I'll have to recheck..I don't have it committed to memory now, But I believe all the federal Inter-Agency freqs are VHF ( I'll look at Wiki later ).

Like I said...back when = 80's and early 90's ; there was a patttern to Federal Freqs. One thing I belive is certain. :) US Marshalls are always on 163.200 ;)

ETA: my range was off. It starts at 173.2000, so that jives with your list.
