Ah, as I said in earlier posts, I would detail what I have found with the Okaloosa County SLERS. There are at least 3 talkgroups on the system, Fire South, Fire North, and EMS. The control channel is 866.625.
What I have found is that most of it sounds like digital. Big surprise, right? Haha...I say most for a reason though. As I have listened in the past few weeks to that frequency, I have noticed that when there are 'big' calls that require several fire departments to respond that VOICE (analog) can be heard on the SLERS system. I have no idea HOW this works.....but it is through the SLERS system, because no traffic is heard on reverse on the VHF...and each time the radio keys, a digital tag is sent through.

I have some video of this, and if it is wanted, I may post it. I know all of this might not make sense haha. The video will provide a good insight.

In the meantime, today 1/25/2011, Okaloosa is only using VHF, and that is for both fire and EMS. There is zero traffic on SLERS. I am nearly 100% sure though that this is just transitional into the County Warning Point at the EOC. (Enjoy it while you can?)

Default Second thoughts

On second though, there is a way dispatch can turn of the ProVoice portion of the EDACS system. I know from previous forums, that Okaloosa doesn't use the encryption portion of the SLERS...so that's what it would leave, ProVoice being turned off and made into a typical EDACS system. Also, I think in the last post I said that the 866.625 was the control channel...well it's not the "control" channel, but it is the channel that the traffic is heard on. Okaloosa has several frequencies in the FCC Database for SLERS, but only the 866.625 (as far as I can tell from the north end) has traffic on it. None of the frequencies they have been licensed for have a control channel on it....so not sure what they are using for control.

If you ask me the whole Okaloosa SLERS thing is a big old mess. They been on and off with that system for several years now and with money as tight as it is, will see what happens.

All this migrating to inferior radio systems in FL such a SLERS is a shame for the firefighters and cops that will be put in even more danger when this garbage system crashes, and it will. I guess conventional VHF and UHF systems are no good anymore. Quick, some radio salesman needs to tell NYPD, they still have one that works better than any other system I have monitored on RR so they must change now!

Hearing a lot of Medical units on the regular freq. 154.860 and one they are similcasting on. Are they just checking the system or what. The volume on 154.860 and the other one is LOUD and a bit muffled to my old ears. How about you guys?

They are still testing something. Mostly med units this morning. SO dispatch has horrible, loud audio today. Actually turned it off because it was so bad. They said something that nextel service would be down for 2 hours. Phones maybe. Or are they talking about a system they are working on?????

This is the latest I have after getting a tour of the new EOC last night, and talking with a few people.

All of the dispatching is now done at the new EOC. It's all running, but as you have noticed there are still some operational issues. The Sheriff's Office has had the most issues. They didn't elaborate at what those were though. The Sheriff's Office does still use UHF....for now....

This is not set in stone by any means, but the current plan is for EMS and Fire to stay off of SLERS (they have not used it since they moved into the new building), and to get the Sheriff's Office onto SLERS. For now, they are using the old dispatch consoles on the fire and EMS side until they can get everything from the dispatch center on the north end moved to the new EOC/County Warning Point.

Okaloosa County does have a NEXTEL system that they use. I do believe they use the same system for the MDC...but as with most NEXTEL systems, voice is also included. I know every department in the county (fire, EMS, and SO) has a NEXTEL phone.

Well, it's possible Fire and EMS could go back to SLERS eventually, but for right now, they will be staying on VHF.
The only plan for SLERS in Okaloosa right now is taking SO off of UHF and putting them on SLERS.

I hope they get the audio fixed before they go there( SLERS) for the deputies sake and safety. It sounds horrible almost all the time now. Today was a mess.

I know they have had people up there working on it! I feel just as bad for the dispatchers having to deal with that too...can't make anything easier. I think they'll get the UHF side fixed before they roll SO out onto SLERS....especially since SLERS will take a while to implement (look at how long it took to get fire/EMS on).

Good news for all you folks in the Florida Panhandle. I posted in the news section. SLERS = Bad Coverage and $$$ and users are starting to realize it.

Default Okaloosa SO Backs Out of SLERS

I read in the NW Florida Daily News today that the Sheriff's Office in Okaloosa County has backed out of SLERS and will upgrade their current system instead. Excellent! Good decision Sheriff Ashley!
