WELCOME! - New people check in here - Frequently Asked Quesions - Laws, SLERS, FHP...
Attention Moderators or Administrators: Can you please make this thread a sticky? I’m considering it a work in progress and would like to continue to add to it as we see fit. Thanks!
Welcome to the Radio Reference Florida Forum!
On behalf of all of the members who frequent this forum, we would like to welcome you. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. We only ask that you read this thread and do a little searching before asking. Below we’ve got answers to many Florida Related questions that seem to come up pretty regularly.
1. What is the legality of scanners or radio equipment in Florida?
The most recent law was published in 2005 and applies only to equipment in motor vehicles. This law states that unless your vehicle is an official “Emergency Vehicle”, you are a Ham Radio operator, or member of the news media, you may not “install or transport […] any frequency modulation radio receiving equipment so adjusted or tuned as to receive messages or signals on frequencies assigned […] to police or law enforcement officers or fire rescue personnel.”
In plain English this means that unless you meet the above criteria, you CAN NOT legally have a radio or scanner that receives Law Enforcement or Fire Rescue frequencies in your vehicle. Whether or not an officer is knowledgeable of this law and/or decides to enforce it or if you think can get away with it does not matter. The law is the law!

2. How do I scan FHP / SLERS / State Law Enforcement / M/A-COM / etc…?
You can’t - sorrry! There is not, nor will there ever be, a scanner that can. Doing a search for any of the above key words will yield pages of results that would make for a great rainy day read.
3. ???? It's up to you Florida People!
This is your chance to submit additional frequently asked questions to appear in this first post. I’ll keep editing and adding questions as we feel they are necessary.

Nice work, FF! Hopefully this will make things a lot easier on new visitors.
I was hoping the mods would come up with something like this - kudos to UFEMTFF for making it happen!

You might want to consider putting this into the Location Specific Wiki.
That way anybody can add or edit the material.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will do that next time I have some free time.
Are you able, in the meantime, to make this a sticky? Please?

Sorry guy but I'm not a moderator of this forum.
Just thought I'd point out what I did in the Wiki for my local area.
Kind of like a guide to scanning my particular County for somebody visiting the area.

O.K. Gotcha.
How do I find out who the mod is for this forum? I'll shoot him a PM.

Well done....this should hopefully reduce the multiple threads on monitoring SLERS and the legality of carrying a scanner in FL.

The moderator for this forum is loumaag. Thanks for making this UFEMTFF, it will make it alot easier on new members and will hopefully prevent the continuously answered questions about SLERS and other systems.

If you want this to be an informative (STICKY) post maybe you could go on to explain what "M", "A-COM", "etc" stands for, some folks might not know what "SLERS" is also.
And then explain WHY you can't monitor them. Unless you want people to go ahead and do the search anyway.
thanks.

M/A-Com doesn't stand for anything. It is a radio manufacturer, also known as Macom or MA/com. They produce the EDACS, Provoice, Aegis and OpenSky technologies.
SLERS is Florida's State Law Enforcement Radio System

Our moderator doesn't allow PMs, so he's either seen the thread and doesn't want to sticky it or hasn't seen it yet.

Try posting your request in the Administration forum. An administrator shouldn't be turning off his PM's.

Sorry - I either looked in the wrong spot or something's been changed, but Lou's PMs are turned on, and I sent him one asking for a sticky.

This is sorta not true. M/A-Com is a successor to Microwave Associates. They changed their name in the late 70s as they branched out into other products (most notably acquiring EDACS from GE). And, of course, they were later acquired themselves by Tyco.
Our TV station has several paths of M/A-Com 6 GHz analog microwave.

Newby
Hello,
My name is Victor, I am head of security for Rosenberg Diamonds & Co. in Boca Raton, Fl.
We just purchased the BCD-396T handheld scanner and are looking for someone in the area to program it for us - we will pay of course. Need it done this weekend and would prefer to have someone local vs. sending it out to have it done.
Please contact me @ southfloridapi at gmail.com if interested.
Thanks,
Victor Sakalauskas
