New Posts Function
The "New Posts" function limits the number of pages to 20. Previously this limit was typically reached if not logged in for about 2 days. Now that there are more forums and more sub-forums, the limit is reached much more quickly. I suggest that the number of pages for this function is at least doubled (to 40) or perhaps set to 50.
Thank you.

I noticed this also. I think the LinkBack feature screws it up.

I think it's actually 250 threads, not x number of pages - as I have my prefs set to allow max posts per page. I'd like to see it doubled to show max 500 threads in the New Posts search results.

I changed it to 100 threads per search result yesterday. We've had some instances of searches that were killing the database due to the size of our database.
Unfortunately, "new posts" is grouped in with overall search parameters. I'll look at what changes we can possibly make but for right now this is something that needed to be scaled back due to performance issues.

All the background upgrades over the last 30 days and we're down to the 100 newest posts?
I would assume the upgrades did not affect this issue?
Guess we'll start missing posts unless we log in every 3 or 4 hours.
As I had posted earlier in this thread; I was hoping we could get past the 20 page mark in new posts;-)
Now we're down from 20 to 4.
Hope you find a fix.

David,
The infrastructure upgrades don't help limitations with the forums software. This is known issue for large boards.
I did implement filtering today for tavern posts in the new posts search query. That should help.
I'll update the query to allow 250 results per query. As you can imagine, I'd rather you logon more often
I'm mean really, you want to page through MORE than 20 pages of new posts. Damn.

Thank you sir.
I'd love to log-in more but some days the damn family and work get in the way of your website...
I'll try to figure out better balance between life and this hobby soon.

New Posts is now somewhat useless

It would be nice to not have to log in for an entire week (while I am off in the woods/etc monitoring new frequencies) and the able to come back, sit down and go over EVERYTHING posted while I was away.
It used to be I could be not logged in for several days and the 20 page limit was not reached. Since the expanded forums was implemented, it takes only 2 days to reach 20 pages. Now with the further expansion (of just California forums) it would be even more.
I'd much rather log in once a day or every other day (and read 100 pages if that is what it takes) than have to log in every few hours to keep from missing something.

Could forum posts be grouped (as they are in Yahoogroups) into a Daily Digest?
Not globally for Today's Posts, but categorically.

Could the "New Posts" function be implemented so you have a separate search for "New Tavern Posts"?
That way people could find all new posts without taxing the system.
Just a thought.

New to this forum but not new to forums in general. This forum seems to work differently, so I thought I should ask to make sure it's not something in the UserCP I can change myself.
Re: New Posts - usually the newest posts are bolded until you read them. They are here too except they change whether you have read them or not. Seems to be after some pre-determined time they just all seem to be marked as read. Is this something I can change? Or why is it this happens?
Along the same lines - when a post is 'new' there is the little icon to take you to the next (1st) unread post. This icon doesn't seem to work as it takes me to posts which are probably newer but in many cases I haven't read any yet and it is an old post. So I go right past the beginning to some other posts. Is this something I can change? Or why is it this happens?
I thought someone here would know the answers to these questions. I guess I want to know "Am I doing something wrong"?
Thanks for any insight.

No, you are not doing anything wrong. I asked this question, well close to this question, some time ago. This is the answer I received. Not the answer I wanted, but I now understand.

What I was really hoping is that someone who could make this work correctly would either fix it or post why is it this way, so we could all understand.
Guess that ain't gonna happen.
The way it is setup now sooo much info is missed this way.

It was explained (your question in #15) why it is the way it is in qlajlu's post. When you first log in it starts a timer. I forget how long, maybe 60 min, before it marks everything as read.
The other alternative is to have the board track what you have and haven't read. Unfortunately as large as this forum is that's too server intensive and not worth the added load.

I wonder what starts this timer when I never logout? Must be something else going on too because the messages toggle read/unread even when I don't logout.

The timer starts on your first connection to the server while logged in under your account.
