this sadly is growing trend. it seems with the middle class disappearing the need for second hand items is going down.

especially with electronics.

those that have the cash right now, have enough that they can just buy new and the rest are just struggling to keep food on the table.

got to remember the used market is driven by the rich buying new toys every year and unloading their old stuff which is then bought by the middle class who have some disposable income, but not enough to afford new stuff.

with the middle class disappearing that link in the chain is broken.

you can tell the state of the economy just by watching the classifieds (here and elseware) by seeing 1) how quickly items go and 2) what items are being bought and 3) for how much below value.

any way back on topic if i could find a free software program that could work with a BC-780, and BCD396T and be able to import from the RR DB, then i would probably go for a premium membership.

I also maintain an annual Premium Membership, not because I need to program my scanners, but to help me help other members. My membership allows me to import various systems to check what a member having trouble should see in his programming. My scanners are programmed to my liking and I have no intentions of changing that without some sort of outside influence forcing a change. I know at least one member that has purchased every type of programming software also, just to help newbies.

That being said, I, like Highpockets, have no intentions of purchasing used equipment sight unseen (pictures do not satisfy this for me). Just think of me being funny that way, but for those who wish to sell their equipment, they should consider a minimum $7.50 (or $15 Credit Card) membership as a cost of doing business.

I know Lindsay's intentions are well based in his desire to try to keep bad things from happening to members using this (Lindsay's) Web site. He has a personal interest in trying to keep fraud and spam (I have issues with the current way of fighting spam) from sullying his life's work. Give him a chance to see what works best. I don't think this requirement is carved in granite and could be changed if another way of providing the best protection should be presented.

Cool Too Bad!

Even though this is a done deal and my opinion does not matter one way or the other, I have to express it. I believe that this new change will NOT be a deterent to fraud on here. Furthermore, it penalizes those of us who for years have maintained a good reputation as buyers and sellers. I for one am unemployed as many Americans are these days. I have had to sell a lot of my gear (some on here, thanks to RR) to supplement what little money I do have left. While to most people the fee for premium service is nothing to worry about, for someone like me, a husband and father of 3, with no prospect of work in sight, it IS a big deal. I understand that the owners want to make money, but I wish it did not come at the expense of those of us who for years have "played it straight" on here. Until my finances get back on track, I will be forced to be a spectator. I have no need for, nor can I afford the extras that a premium service brings. Good luck with making money. That I believe will work out, however actualy stopping or putting a dent on fraud on here, I doubt it. Just my 2 cents worth.

You might want to look at a dictionary and learn the meaning of the word.

For all you whiners that can't afford the less than 9 cents per day that it would cost to be a premium member, have you forgotten that there are other means to sell your stuff? craigslist, ebay, i'm sure there are many others...

The sad Part is....... This is the way the world is starting to become if there is a way to make a few quick bucks they will do it. They don't care about the small people or people on a fixed income trying to do what they like to do with like me and many many others now days not a whole lot of money.

I think if "they" keep it this way many people will find other places to buy and sell that will not charge them to try and find what they are looking for or trying to sell

Again, there is craigslist.com. Free last time I checked.
At < 9 pennies per day, I think Lindsay was considering the little guy when he set up the fees here.

OH, and radioreference was originally set up as a database of radio frequencies, not a swapmeet for everybodys stuff.

Craig's list is nothing, absolutely NOTHING compared to this website. You cannot expect to compare a site where anything and everything goes for sale to a site like this, specificaly catered to our hobby. The audience is not the same. One will never have the same chances of selling a scanner on there as you have on here where scanning hobbyists from all over the country and the world are viewing the wants ads. It just isn't the same. Instead of suggesting that we go elsewhere, which people do not want to do, try understanding the point people who do not agree are making. This new move is penalizing us because of those who misused and abused this site. Calling us "whiners" is just showing that you are totally unaware of the point being made. Notwithstanding this classifieds thing, this is still the greatest website in the world for our hobby. That will never change....

Manny, I agree with you 100percent. Having been injured and now on SS Disability even with my wife working the extra's like RR come after all else is paid. I recently sold an item here and the buyer wanted references. I suggested he check me on Ebay and PayPal. I believe if a buyer were to research the seller the fraud problem would lessen. For those of you who keep using the 'if you can't afford the pennies a day for a premium membership' some day when you have a limited fixed income, maybe then you will understand. Just my 2cents worth!

Not sure where the thread is going but just my 2 cents I don't like the new for sale and wanted forums. I would sell something to somebody looking on criaglist but I would never try to sell something there. My duaghter tried to sell something on there and wanted to use my paypal to get the money, never been involved in such a scam. The emails looked like they were coming from paypal and it took filing a legal complaint to get them to stop

I was not comparing the two, just stating the obvious, that there are other means.

The adjective I use to describe when people are whining is whiners. Thank you for your off-topic comment, and now mine...

Every time we have some significant form of change it always seems to incur this type of feedback. I'm not going to spout economics logic, how to run a business, etc. The changes that have happened at RR are what's needed for any shrewd business owner; RadioReference is a business! This is not what Lindsay does in his spare time; this site is his career. Hey, maybe it will push some people away but it may also encourage others who may have been a bit doubtful in the past about selling on here.

FWIW, the old Classified forums are a big, big PITA. If it wasn't up to Lindsay they probably would have been removed. As little as the Moderation staff can do we are expected to do more regardless of how little control we have. So no matter what we would have done with the Classifieds there still would be a certain group outraged over it.

This is the reality of it. I get a lot of flak for not sugarcoating my words, or acting all sales droid-like, but you're gonna get an honest opinion out of me without it.
