Restricting the ability to view only new posts?

I'm uncertain whether this is even possible, but here goes nothing...

In the last year or so, I've chased a fair number of threads out of the HF area from folks who have legitimate questions, but post them in the wrong area. Part of this, I think, is not knowing that there are a lot of other forums, and not knowing that they exist (the other is obvious confusion - they don't know where to put it, so they dump in in the first spot they think will work).

I'm willing to wager that at least a fair percentage of newcomers use a 'view all new posts' function - and that doesn't expose them to other forums that may be buried or not quite so active. I know that there is moderation in place for newcomers until a certain time frame expires or a number of successful posts - how about something like that to restrict newcomers from using the 'view all new posts' function for a time?

That would obviously be somewhat overwhelming, but that's the price you pay for coming to someplace as wideranging as this board is. You learn as you go.

I have also seen several initial posts from users that had issues, such as off-topic posts, thread hijacks, very loosly related questions added to threads that have been dead for years, etc. Since those posts should've been moderated, I would think that the issues would've been corrected as part of the moderation process.

Thinking about my comment above, perhaps the moderation process is limited to just approve (actual user post) or delete (spam or otherwise distuptive post) so it may not be possible to correct those user's errors as part of the moderation process.

We should be handling those issues when we see them in the moderation queue. Sometimes they just get missed, which is something we all are working to get better at. Also, keep in mind new users who are premium subscribers are not moderated.

The moderation queue for vB really lacks a lot of information. We only see the member name, thread name and the body of the post. Due to the size of the forums the queue is the best way to manage moderated posts so we can't look for them via the standard forum view (like everyone sees).

It's a board-wide problem lately with people hijacking threads and posting to the wrong forums. Other than us posting announcements and getting in everyone's face who do not need it, we have to find a common ground. Believe me, it drives me up the wall to have to spend so much time moving threads around.

Thanks for the clarification. As I indicated in my second post, it appeared like this issue was more like an "infrastructure issue" than the moderators ignoring the problems. I'm sure they'd much rather deal with all of the issues at once, if possible, than having the posts pop up into the queue multiple times. It must, like you indicated, bother the moderators at least as much (probably much more) than it does use users.

That's not really it as any mod has access to the queue. Since we all work and have lives, and 99% of us work normal shifts, there are going to be periods where the queue is going to build up.

I have considered queue specific moderators and will evaluate that sooner than later.
