Search with only 3 letters

I'm trying to do a search for gps avl systems in different mfg forums. I understand that only using 3 characters can open you up to a lot of results, but is there really no way to search posts with 3 characters? I've run into this more than a few times and it's kind of frustrating. Thanks!

If you've only been using the site's built-in search bar, I've had better luck in the past using just Google but preface the search with the command site:forums.radioreference.com [space] and then whatever search term.
