Default What service is 148.275?

Hi,

What radio service is 148.275 in? I Close Called a bunch of little kids screwing around on it and it doesn't fit in any of the citizens band frequencies I'm aware of. Googling it didn't help much either.

I'm in southeastern NH. I'm imagining whatever it is, it probably isn't intended to be basically FRS, which is what these kids and their mom were doing with it. It was making it a good quarter mile to my antenna (which is by no means impressive, a simple little all band stick on top of my house) at a little less than full quieting from the mom inside a mobile home on a portable.

I would have thought so too but I don't think the one mom had would have been able to overload it given how far away it was, especially given that I'm using a Uniden scanner, which are known to be quite resistant to overload, and the ones the kids had were a full signal with no static or anything that would have said to me it was off frequency (they were about a block away). Nor was it interfering with anything I normally pick up.

I'm in the town of Exeter, NH, about 10-15 miles out from the coast. I've been scanning the frequency since then but it's been quiet. This is the first "out of the ordinary" thing I've ever picked up so that's why I'm so intrigued by it.

Yes, it was. But no one has validated it since 2008

That was going to be my guess, but that would be a frequency of 49.425. Best I can tell from the internet is 49.800 to 49.890 is the band that kiddy-walkie-talkies use, and I believe those only put out about 100mW.

It's quite possible it's a family using Chinese radios. With Chinese radios being so cheap I wouldn't doubt that more than a few people have bought them, punched in some random frequency, and started using them as personal walkie-talkies. Several of the ads for them on eBay don't mention that any kind of license is needed to use them. Also could have been someone using modified ham gear, I've seen a few modified ham HT's on Craigslist being sold as "hunting/fishing/camping" radios, usually with 144.000 or 148.000 programmed in as the "channel" to use.

Who knows what it could have been. Maybe you can save that frequency to your memory bank and scan it and see if any more activity happens.
