Default Buying a new scanner...Suggestions

So currently I own a Radio Shack Pro-106 scanner, I am starting to get annoyed with its decoding or droping of the signal. It cuts in and out which is very frustrating. SO I am looking to upgrade and I am having a hard time deciding, I am looking at the PSR-800, seems like a good scanner I would miss the key pad but if it gave me better reception I would defiantly consider it. So my question is this... What scanner is the "best" out currently to scan a P25 system(Minnesota ARMER system). I have never used anything but a radioshack scanner so I would be curious to see what else is out there.

Looking at the Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER) Trunking System, it looks like you have a bunch of simulcasted sites. It's possible that you are running to simulcast digital distortion depending on what sites you are monitoring. There are some recommendations on how to improve that on the link I provided above. In any case, many scanners will probably run into the same problem that you are currently encountering.

If you are not monitoring a simulcasted site, you probably want to consider upgrading the antenna before dropping money on a new scanner. It looks like most of the ARMER system is on the 800 MHz band, so you can always try out a GRE/RadioShack 800 MHz antenna, though you should research and consider other solutions as there are many good antennas out there.

I'd wait until CES is over next week before you pull the trigger on anything. It's probably just wishful thinking on my part but I'm wanting another digital scanner but I don't want to buy now and have something new show up in Motorola's catalog next weekend.

I can't speak regarding the specific system your monitoring, BUT I can say coming from the pro-164 I had the same concern as you regarding keys. I posted here http://forums.radioreference.com/sho...chasing advice and got some very helpful responses.

My PSR-800 came yesterday and I'm very happy with it so far. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it in my opinion.
