However, unless their policy has changed, GRE dpes not SELL scanners at Dayton. They demonstrate their products, hand out literature, give away ball caps, and generally 'shake hands' with customers. And, if a customer shows interest, they tell you "we do not selll to the public, only our authorized dealers do that and we do not quote prices, that is up to our dealers."

The last several years the head of their booth has been an amateur with the vanity amateur call sign W6GRE.

I do not know if he is still with the company or not.

Another minor point about the Dayton HamVention (actually in Trotwood, OH) the figure of 500,000 persons is off base. Even in the 'salad days' the attendance never reached 50,000! In 2012 the official attendance was in the mid-20,000 and there has been a notable reduction in attendance. Oh, it is understandable with the economic situation, high gasoline prices etc. Don't get me wrong, it is a fine show. The next largest of this type will be in earlly February in Orlando, FL. Those attending should keep an eye out foer GRE.

+1 Seen that. Wanted that thing just for the coverage but not at that price. Why would you considering the alternatives?

Was gonna grab an 800 too right after the holidays just to give GRE a shot but when I seen the price I just kept it moving.

i can kinda understand that, since that is a discontinued scanner, and that is the ONLY place where you can find one brand new in the box.

But the psr 800 they CLEARLY want people to start buying from somewhere else...

Default PRICE GOUGING

I personally think that it is low that companies, stores and businesses will jack the prices up on people because of a limited quantity of stuff. It's bad enough for people who work hard for what they have and just get by.

If this offends anybody, sorry, but I still think it stinks.

Not offensive, just the law of economics.

But what scanner companies are doing this?

Very true. Gasoline should still be 12.9 cents per gallon like it was for the first tank full for my brand new (at the time) 1962 Mercury.

In 1954 I worked nights at a gas station on Long Island and the Esso regular was about 25 cents; I was a senior in HS at the time. I recall vividly later on, about 1975, that it went to 45 cents and I thought, "Here we go!", and I was right. I don't ever recall seeing gas on the East Coast for 12 cents.

If you think someone's pricing is out of line you might want to consider doing without the item until the price comes down, which it eventually will. OTOH, if you absolutely must have it right now then you're putting yourself at the mercy of the gouger.

i think he is talking about scannermaster.....i had been looking to get a PSR 800, but with the shortage, they have jacked the price up to $600....ridiculous. it may be the law of economics, but it shouldnt be for reputable online businesses. let the consumer buy whats left at the regular price. scannermaster just lost all my business.

The business owner will just turn that argument around - and rightly so - and say that they work hard to keep their business going, and will do what it takes to do so. If someone is "just getting by", there's probably things they should be spending their money on other than high-end scanners in the first place.

well that really sucks big time i was not aware that the where touchy feely but no sales that is stupid, you have a customer in front of you you never turn them away any sales person who ever sold anything in their life will tell you It's the teachable moment that turns browsers into buyers you never let somebody walk away with go see HRO,or Universal Radio you put the product in the left hand and take the cash out of the right hand and if i hear that at Dayton i will look at them and tell them I Will Never Buy Another Product From a Company This Stupid and will stick to that no matter if they come out with the mega blockbuster scanner of all time they scan and decode everything including mental telepathy and your local bus weirdo's you will not find one in my house I will not dip into the GRE pool ever again .

That's some BS right there- especially with such a niche market. Upping the price from $445 to $600 overnight is nothing more than a money grab by Scannermaster.

Universal has it for $419.95 - GRE PSR-800 Scanner Radio Receiver, PSR800

I've bought from scannermaster before but have discovered other sources since. Not saying they are gouging but... I've also noticed the scanner prices on ebay have been creeping up over the last month.

Gouging will only get scannermaster more of a negative customer opinion than they may already have. I have never ordered from them.

It must be pretty hard to make a profit and pay the bills when your only 'goods' are scanner related.
I would wager that sales of all scanners, but high end scanners in particular, have dropped considerably over the last few years thanks to encryption and other factors.

If your business only sells scanners and accessories, you either work on high volume, low profit or low volume high profit. As the volume is clearly not there for any of the retailers at the moment, sadly, it only leaves two avenues. Either hike the prices, or close up shop..

Now, if you had an outlet that sold firearms, ammunition and scanners, you might be able to keep selling the scanners at a 5% markup..

if youre in the business of selling scanners, and you cant make it because a supplier had ceased manufacturing, then that has to hurt sales no doubt. but, raising your prices 30-50% to get that last dollar out of the consumer is wrong. everyone knows that the extra money made on the few GRE products left is not going to save the company from going out of business. its a money grab, and pure selfishness. it hurts everyone because now scannermaster has added more to an already tarnished reputation, and the consumer can no longer afford to buy the scanner. not to mention the price may be so high that scannermaster wont sell what is left in inventory so they screw themselves. sorry, economics or no..its wrong ..they have lost my business forever
