Default Motorola speaker mod help

I have no idea where this post should be posted at, mods, feel free to move into adequate spot.

I am looking at buying a motorola NSN6054 speaker to run with my Pro-106 in my car. It is an amplified speaker and i have looked at the schematic for it. My question is this, When installing the stereo mini plug, do i need to have a ground from the plug to the speaker? There are two -12VDC grounds, a + and - audio in, then i believe three +12VDC to run power.

From my understanding, when wiring a stereo mini plug, you wire the audio + and - as well as a ground but there isnt one for this. Do I need to wire a ground from plug?

N0SS' Ham Radio Site - General Info has some information on using the NSN6054A.

A stereo plug has one left channel, one right channel and a common ground. So to connect a mono speaker, such as yours, don't connect anything to the middle ring. Just connect one wire to the left channel (tip) and the other to the ground (see picture).

Your speaker is obviously mono, so you could, as an alternative, just avoid any confusion by connecting the blue and white wires coming from the speaker to a mono plug and plug that into your headphone jack on the scanner. I just installed one of these speakers today in one of my vehicles and this is the method I used.

Alright, looking at the mod pdf on the website pro92b sent, did you do any mods to your moto speaker? Looking at that pdf file, the user added a transformer into the nsn6054 to use it. Is this necessary to use with my 106? Or can i just add a mono plug to the blue and white wires, then wire the power and ground and call it good?

They suggest the option of adding a transformer to avoid the possibility of a ground loop and the resulting hum.

If everything is wired correctly, I would just omit the transformer and see how it sounds; it won't hurt the scanner or the speaker. I had several of these in different vehicles and never had the need to add the isolation transformer.

In the end, just add it if you need to. Adding it beforehand may be a complete waste of time and money and will over-complicate a rather simple project.

Looking at the schematic, it appears as if you need to have the squelch circuit input from the radio for it to work. If not, it looks like the amplifier is always turned off to conserve power. This is a lot different from the old power voice speakers I used. Then, you just had the 12 volts and the audio.

The link I provided shows how to deal with the squelch input.

If you look at this pdf http://www.n0ss.net/motorola_amp_spk..._04jul2009.pdf which comes off the website, it shows you how to install an isolation transformer for the audio. As for the squelch, i plan to run that off a power switch to turn the amp on when i use the 106 as my 106 isnt always in my car.

Yeah, I see it now. When I clicked on MOTOROLA in the first link you posted, all I got was some SPAM ads.

Well, I got the NSN6054a speaker yesterday. Spent the evening wiring it up for scanner use and got it working! It is super loud! I went ahead and added a power switch on the side of the speaker to turn the amp on only when the speaker is in use and its working great. I will try to get pics of the work and install tomorrow! I am now a big fan of motorola amp speakers!
