Default Is this normal ?!?

My wife enjoys listening to my new BCT15X as much as I do.
When I leave the room, she insists I leave it on for her listening pleasure!
I would have never guessed this in a million years.
Is there a doctor in the house? lol

My wife can't stand for mine to be on. She hates to hear it. I tell her that this is how we keep up with what's going on around us. I think she had rather be oblivious at times.

I'm glad yours likes it.

You'd better be careful - she might want to get her own one day...

As far as the local emergency services, my fiancée hates it unless I translate what is going on. As far as weather related comms, she is all about it. She hates tornados so me being informed is bonus!

Thumbs up

I'm not sure. She tells me it gets on here nerves when it's busy and there's a lot of activity, so I showed how to turn it off ... but she never does.
She's also quick to tell me when something big has happened when I come home!

Better what you have than mine. When the scanner's off and a siren goes by the family asks "What's going on?" They never get it that most of the time when the siren goes by the radio traffic that's the most telling (the dispatch for the call) is over so at best you may get "Unit xxx on scene.", which really doesn't tell you much.

Where did you get the Bluetooth transmitter. That's what I've been looking for.

found it on amazon 3.5mm stereo bluetooth
she keeps her radio in her purse so it works for her
mine stays in my pocket when out
does not interfere with radio
it is double sided taped to the back
one piece in the crater and another on top of it
GoGrove bluesense TRM wireless A2DP to be exact
i have seen some that mention multiple pairing. so maybe more could listen at once?

Hi Steve and congratulations. It's great when the wife enjoys our hobbies and shares them with us.

My wife enjoyed listening to the comms but she would ask me which system was transmitting because she didn't know how to identify them by the frequency displayed on the screen. Then I bought the 396T with the alpha tag feature (the older analog scanners didn't have this) and "voila" now she just has to look at the screen and it tells her who's transmitting. Makes her even happier now...and I'm sure you know that..."a happy wife is a happy life".

So, I can't say if it's normal or not, but it sure is pleasant to have someone next to you that gets as much enjoyment from the scanner as you do.

Russell

Sounds like you have yourself a winner! And why wouldn't it be normal? [Mind you, this statement is brought to you by the guy who's in the situation below...]

I used to have radios on all the time up north. That was a while ago. My wife worked dispatching for a small police department and liked listening to what was going on. It was a tight bunch and people stuck together. We moved to the Midwest and she dispatched there for over 10 years. Listening was too much like going to work (and talking on the phone was too much like giving EMD instructions). Still, she listened in and knew what she was getting into if she was the next shift. Would say things like, "I'm glad that happened on THEIR shift!"

We both vested out and moved. Now she can't stand listening. "How can they say that on the air without a supervisor calling them out?" "Did you hear what they said?" "They're sloppy!" "He's laughing on the radio! He can't do that!" and so on. So, I lower the volume or just shut it off. She doesn't say anything about the scanner being on when we're driving but won't listen to it on her own anymore. The different 10-codes mess the both of us up.

But then, some of the rest of the family likes monitoring. Out of my kids, my oldest is a buff and I expect she'll be "on the job" at some point in her life. She hates the scanner... until I turn it on and then she's like, "What did he say?" or "Where's the call?" or "Too bad he's not HERE, then he could stop this guy in front of us!" or "Let's go [on the call]!" (nevermind what we'll do when we get there - which is nothing, or get stuck in traffic). My next oldest is an Explorer and likes to listen for people he knows so he can chat them up the next time he sees them.

And, my mother is the most plugged-in senior citizen in her circle of friends. Whenever something happens, she gets all the "Whaddaya hear?" phone calls from the other ladies because she has her scanner on. She even caught someone the cops went on the lookout for.

Default Glad to hear your opinions

Whether good or bad. The positive replies are just as welcome as the negative replies (and the negative ones aren't that bad, right?)
My wife does turn it up when I've left the room, especially if she hears something that has an interest to her or if a name heard on the scanner sounds familiar.
I was just surprised at how much she does listen to it with me here in the evenings and was interested in others "other half" and if their interest was as equal as my wifes.
Thanks for the replies folks.
I love my scanner, I love the hobby, and I love my wife....for liking my new hobby...lolol !!

Warm wishes too all....

My wife 'says' she hates my scanners.

But, she's always saying to me ... "Did you just hear what was on the scanner?"

She won't admit it but, deep down, she really likes them.

You guys with the better halves that like/enjoy your radios being on are killing me! My wife's standard retort has always been "will you turn that thing off!". It got so bad, she ended up buying me a pair of Bose QC 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones just to shut the noise out (he he).

Now you know why I asked if there was a doctor in the house!!

Speaking about the Bose headphones, I plug the Bose-QuietComfort® 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headphones in when she listens to the television.

And this is what I have plugged into the external speaker port in the back of the scanner that I have on most of the time: Computer MusicMonitor®

Some of my family around me hates it when I have the radio on. For their indulgence, I hooked mine into a pair of Altec Lansing speakers.

Did someone call a Doctor?

wtp, a few of us were talking offline, and wondered if we could do a "ride-along" on one of your dates? We promise to each have our own Bluetooth and concealed radios so that we're minimally disruptive. I have a hidden pocket stitched into my sport jacket.

Something simple for a first date - like maybe Olive Garden? We'd be at table 107 while you're in the booth nearby. Please give it some thought. There's unlimited salad and bread sticks and I hear they're running a "1/2 price on a second meal with a scanner" promo in February. I might have this mixed up with the unlimited shrimp scanner specials at Red Lobster, but I'll double check.

Here's a hypothetical; In a Divorce, if you own a 25,000 channel scanner, does she still get to listen to 12,500 channels?

Entertaining question, Steve. Thanks!
