Ok, so with my 396 sitting in the walmart lot next to a bunch of fast food places, do I need PL codes to get the FF drive thrus? I see PL listed for a lot of channels, do I need to enable CTCSS search while scanning for these frequencies? If not, when would I use this setting? I have read the user manual but it's not a lot of help.

I understand PL is like a 'secret knock' code, correct?

PL is a tone that is transmitted with each transmission and if you set the scanner to monitor only transmissions with that tone then that is all you will hear. It is an optional item and you don't need it to monitor a frequency with.

I listen to a local fire dept. and also a sheriff's dept. in another County on the same frequency. I employ the PL tone and I hear only the Fire dept. It works well for me.

To answer your question and ONLY your question, no.
