I don't listen to much conventional and most that I listen to does not have tones.

I have a 996 and this is my assumption.

Tones allow different groups of people to share the same frequency. If I program in a tone I will only hear the chatter from that group associated with that tone.

But what I don't know is: If I do not program a tone, will I hear all the traffic on the frequency or will I hear none?

Sorry for the newbie question.

You can easily find and program the tone of the agency for which you are interested. Just set the 996 to search PL/tones. When you hear the agency of interest, look to see what tone has been found...it will be blinking(not searching) while the conversation is underway. Then program that tone into the freq. I don't know the specifics of the 996, so might be slightly different, and may allow you to auto program the tone/freq.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I'm loading up the 996 for a long trip and trying to keep it somewhat simple as I'm mostly passing through.

Thanks again!
