Today the FCC released its long awaited rule on 700 MHz. The only potential impact to scanners is they extended the frequency range down 1 MHz which means the public safety portion will be 763 to 805. This means that Uniden and GRE scanners will not cover this one MHz as they start at 764 MHz.
This may not impact scanner listeners as the narrow bands that will primarily be voice will run from 769 to 775 and then 793 to 805 MHz. The 763 to 769 MHz will be broadband and may or may not have any voice on it.
The FCC also announced that they are going to license a portion of the public safety portion of 700 to one entity and that entity will partner with the winning bidder on a block of adjacent 700 spectrum to build a nationwide broadband network. This will be a first and will permit public safety and commercial to share spectrum, with public safety having first priority. The commercial bidder must build out the nationwide network.
