Some scanners have a "tone search" feature that will display the sub audible tone. The advantage is if there are two users on a frequency but they each use different tones, you can set the scanner to have the tone of the user you want to hear and you won't hear other users on that frequency who have different tones. Example: there are two users on 464.525. They are both repeated, but I only want to listen to the user with the tone 100.0 but not the one using 94.8. I can do that on my newer scanners but on old scanners without the tone option, I have to listen to both users.

The tones are also useful for helping you identify who you are hearing when conditions are right and distant signals are being received.

Your BCT15 will find them if they are being used, you just have to set it up on either Searches
of Individual frequencies. It's also useful if you live in a area where you get interference to keep the radio quiet, if you set it for encode.
