Question New to scanning

Hi Im looking for a scanner to listen to the local police in my area. Can I get a hand held unit that will pick up all the channels. Im looking for somthing affordable. I was also wondering about this trunk system that the police run is there a way I can still pick up on whats going on with a scanner from radio shack or do I need a special system. Any info will be great thank's. Gunner from Canada

Hello gunner72 ,welcome to RadioReference

Where abouts in Ontario are you ? Some systems are "in the clear" analog or digital while other PD's are encrypted.
Listening to Toronto,York or Peel is possible with an affordable scanner.

If you are looking to hear the OPP you will need a digital scanner which may not be in your budget.

No, there is no way of listening in on the city Police in London,Ontario. It is an encrypted system for the most part. There are very few clear analog talk groups.
The Fire Dept. and other services are okay though.

Without OPP, perhaps you could buy an analog trunktracking radio in the $100-$200 range. If you want to hear OPP, you will need a digital trunktracker in the $400-$500 range.
