Default Fishy eBay Item

After buying a PRO-106 this week, I did what anyone that burned money right through their pocket does, check eBay AFTERWARDS to see if they got hosed

Looks like I made out at $400 new. But I came across this auction and it just did'nt look right:

Radio Shack Pro 106 Scanner BRAND NEW IN BOX - eBay (item 250517914426 end time Oct-24-09 13:03:01 PDT)

First clue, the seller lists the starting bid at $300. Pretty low for someone who knows what they have. Even at $400 it would sell. The display is listed as "4 inches", not even close. Lastly, if you look close, the picture is pasted over an older picture. He claims he used a cell phone.

Anyways, I just did'nt want a board member to go bid on this and get a raw deal. Just does not look legit.

Clue #2... He joined eBay October 21, 2009 and this is his first item for sale. I hope somebody doesn't get taken.

Seriously, thanks for the alert.

Wirelessly posted (MOT-QA30/00.72 UP.Browser/7.2.7.5.610 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

If this was legit, having the starting bid at 300 could be legit, lower bids get more bidders and can help the seller in the long run, however, the other aspects of this spell S-C-A-M.

I don't see any problems other than his sign up date and zero feedback. He states that he lifted the specs from the Radioshack.com website, and I just checked - he did. So, you could probably blame the errors on Radio Shack.

The picture looks like it's a low quality photoshop edit, not pasted over another picture. But the details are irrelevant - it's a cruddy picture.

Personally, I wouldn't bid on it but not because I think it's a scam. I just don't buy low end consumer electronics from unproven sellers on the internet.

Nobody has bid on it yet. Something just doesn't add up. I'm going to watch it and see how it goes down.

Look closely at the TOP on the picture. You can see the metal of another BNC connector and the tops of another knob. I am not sure, but it looks like the very left edge is also part of that rear picture. It is deff. a picture pasted over another.

As far as the image goes, it's entirely possible its a crappy camera. One of my very first digital cams would do that to pics every once and a while, just not sure why he didn't try to retake the picture.

.... Yeah, Kansas City Kansas is a hotbed for criminal internet activity, what with being a haven for offshoring laundered money and such!

Well, everyone's gotta have their first item auction sometime. But getting TWO of these for a birthday? THAT'S fishy! If he's a kid, probably got one from parents, one from grandparents. Or one from each divorced parent. If he's not a kid, maybe one from his wife and one from his girlfriend. (Me, cynical??)

Who among us would not find a use for two identical scanners? Or at least take it back to the store and trade for a mobile version of the same? Poor guy must actually need the money.

I see what you're talking about, but that could also be from a sloppy job of resizing and cropping. the connector and knob on the radio are chopped off, but the sliver "underneath" is a connector and the top of a knob.

It's just a lousy photoshop job. Yeah, it's probably pasted over another picture, but I think it's part of the same original image.
