Wow! The Bahamas to Central Minnesota. What a change that must have been.

Compared to the other Caribbean "nations" that I've been to, the Bahamas is actually pretty efficient but it still takes twice as long to get anything done as you'd ever expect. Once you accept that everything runs on island time, it can be a pleasant place to be.
The Bahamas total defense budget, including the coast guard and the police, is only about $20 million a year, so the hurricanes really were devastating to the communications infrastructure. They got some US aid to replace the radios and controllers that were destroyed by water damage but many of the towers on the outer islands were pretty flimsy to begin with and were destroyed. Most of the Cable and Wireless towers survived but they are beefy structures compared to what the Bahamas government put up. I'll be interested to hear if they really did get the trunked system up again. Last I heard, the government was negotiating to use the Cable and Wireless towers for about 80% of the control sites but there has been some tension between C&W and the government since the government wants to open up the telco market to competition.
Sorry. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
