Default scanning in the bahamas

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I don't see where else to put this location specific post.

But my question is about the legality of scanning in the Bahamas. Second part is if anyone can point me to a resource about frequencies in the area.

Next week I am staying on Paradise Island, just outside Nassau, and am thinking about bringing the scanner along.

If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Heres what I would do, bring one of your older scanners that you wouldnt mind losing. If they take it, you can probably talk them into mailing it back to your home in the good 'ol USA. The chances of you getting caught w/ it are slim. I say take it with you and tell us what you hear!!

Besides I'm sure you won't be the only person over there with a scanner!!

This is all I could GOOGLE up for you.

BAHAMAS FSS FREQUENCIES
Freeport (50NM Area) 122.3
Nassau (50 NM Area) 128.0
Abaco Remote 124.2
Bimini Remote 124.2
Eleuthera Remote 124.2
George Town Remote 124.2
Inagua Remote 124.2
San Salvador 124.6
Grand Bahama (remote) 126.9
Nassau (remote) 118.4

Actually I did a search and you'll need digital!!!!! (Be brave and carry your digital scanner!!)
Heres a link:

Be careful and have fun!
Hope this helps,

You could call or email and ask... Nothing seems to be indicated ..but you may want to check. PS if you email and get a reply save and print it and take it with yiu.. couldn't hurt if the issue arises.

I went on a cruise there a few weeks back, I could not pick up the 800 TRS at all, all of the police I saw had what looked like UHF antennas on their HT's on the island. I did not carry my 296 off the boat and while I was on the island I did not take allot of time to do much scanning I was being dragged about, um I mean I was shopping!!

The Royal Bahamas Police trunked system suffered a lot of damage due to last year's hurricanes. My understanding is that they are using a temporary UHF system with repeaters mounted on the Cable and Wireless towers on the various islands. I don't have a list of the exact frequencies but it's in the 453-454 range. They were supposed to have the trunked system back on line by July but, with island time, it's not likely that they'd meet that date.

Wow! The Bahamas to Central Minnesota. What a change that must have been. Compared to the other Caribbean "nations" that I've been to, the Bahamas is actually pretty efficient but it still takes twice as long to get anything done as you'd ever expect. Once you accept that everything runs on island time, it can be a pleasant place to be.

The Bahamas total defense budget, including the coast guard and the police, is only about $20 million a year, so the hurricanes really were devastating to the communications infrastructure. They got some US aid to replace the radios and controllers that were destroyed by water damage but many of the towers on the outer islands were pretty flimsy to begin with and were destroyed. Most of the Cable and Wireless towers survived but they are beefy structures compared to what the Bahamas government put up. I'll be interested to hear if they really did get the trunked system up again. Last I heard, the government was negotiating to use the Cable and Wireless towers for about 80% of the control sites but there has been some tension between C&W and the government since the government wants to open up the telco market to competition.

Sorry. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
